Who else fell asleep in A Chorus Line?

I didn't see the original, but I can honestly say A Chorus Line is the most boring broadway show I have ever seen. In fact it is more boring than Lestat and The Lion King put together. Does it have a decent plot? No. Does it have a decent cast? No. Does it have a decent set? No. I was quite dissapointed with this show as supposedly it is a classic.
Sorry to "bash" the show. It just "wasn't my cup of tea".
I appologize to anyone who actually liked it.

Personally, I love the show. Just because there aren't huge sets and effects doesn't mean that it's not good. You're supposed to be there for mainly the music and acting, not for the effects.

I have to agree with dramarama on this one. It's a slightly better than mediocre score (admit it, people: you know it's true), and the whole evening is style over substance, in a backwards kind of way. I was less than impressed when I saw the original run -- a good part of me kept wondering what it was that gave this thing such a long run, because it sure wasnt the material. The performances were incredible, to be sure, but after a while, the soul searching got a bit much. And I've never liked it that they copped out on the ending.

I wouldnt say it's the most boring musical ever - Lord knows there are plenty of contenders for that crown - but it's definitely one of the most over-hyped.

I loved it. I liked the simplicity of it and I thought the cast was terrific. I like how a lot of them were unknowns.

I would suggest that dramamrama avoid THE FANTASTICKS, DEUCE and COMPANY. Those shows have sets that are even more sparse.

However, you can get your fill of glitzy sets and costumes in BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, PHANTOM OF THE OUTHOUSE and SPAMALOT. These productions are mind-mumbingly bad and neet high production values to gloss things over.

I saw The Fantastiks. I didn't mind so much the sets in that. I just felt that A Chorus Line's set could be better. I mean, honestly, the best they could do was have a mirror in the backround for, what was it? 2 scenes!
And I wouldn't say Spamalot was mind-mumbling bad. I don't think it deserved Best Musical though.

You don't need to apologize for your opinion, but maybe you should re-think telling other people what to do based on it. And maybe not be so offensive about it. "It is just a group of unknown actors who think they can sing/dance"? Pretty un-called for. From a Broadway standpoint, many of this cast are hardly unknowns, and just to single one out, Deidre Goodwin is one of the best dancers around, and not because she "thinks" she is.

I see from your other posts you made since you joined yesterday, that you enjoyed Legally Blonde. Me, couldn't stand it. Not fond of movie musicals. But just because I don't like it, I should tell others not to go see it? Not a chance. Broadway's big, and there's room for the revivals, the jukebox and movie musicals, Disney stuff, as long as there's still room for the plays and more adventurous musicals. Why be so negative?

Last, did you really, really fall asleep? Maybe you need more rest.

you are not alone in your opinion. Have to agree with a lot of what the original poster said. Granted the current production on broadway isn't good, and full of low energy mediocre performances. If you go see a good production of it, there are moments of merit. Though few and far between.

I didn't fall asleep. I just really didn't enjoy it. I liked Legally Blonde, which is a surprise because I don't seem to like a lot of what's on broadway these days. And just for the record, I Hate Jukebox Musicals!

I don't know why you feel the need to bash a show like that. Are you honestly trying to look out for other people so they don't have to suffer as you suffered? Yeah, I doubt it. Seems rather that you a) needed to get that off your chest, and b) needed attention so you blew it way out of proportion.

I really hope no one decides on shows based on posts like that.

I haven't seen The Revival of Les Mis, neither have I ever had a desire to see Phantom, especially after th movie. I have no idea what is keeping Tarzan alive, because when I saw it it was practically empty. A Chorus Line is definately better then Tarzan anyway! And i'm seeing Pirate Queen next week so we'll have to see.

And ghostlight, I only used the word hate once, to describe how I don't like jukebox musicals. But ok, i'll use the word dislike from now on.

I've never heard A Chorus Line described as boring, ever.

Personally, I think it's one of the most enthralling and excititng shows currently playing.

This cast of A Chorus Line is subpar and honestly, the score really only contains two great songs (At the Ballet and Nothing)but it's still very entertaining. The book is excellent and Bennett's staging is excellent. Dramarama, you're in a minority here.

I have yet to see this revival so I don't know about the cast, but one of the great things I love about ACL is the lack of any type of set. There are no special effects, no frills, no extravagant costumes, nothing to take your focus off the dancers on stage. This is a show that relies on pure TALENT and not spectacle and with a good cast, it can be a great 2 hours at the theatre.
