Fosca3...playing off the other actors IS one of the smartest moves an actor can make, and best oportunities they have, while playing "live" stage. The fact that they can change the way they play their character each time, is a bonus.
From the point of view of the audience, though, it is two-fold...
If the play is done exactly the same, EVERY time, and you go to see it again, either, you are glad they repeated what you saw before (because obviously you "liked" it so much as it was, that you came back), or you are done with the "second" viewing.
If the play is changed (here, not only the acting elements, but also set, costuming, props, etc, should be considered, as well), then you feel like you "witnessed" a totally *original*--moment in time--so to speak.
WHICH is why, I am SO glad I have taken the time to see some of my favorite plays, over and over, again. Each time, I felt "priviledged " to have seen something that, perhaps some ohers would have missed out on, and wished they had bought a ticket THAT night!

I saw every new play of the season and SEAFARER was extremely deserving of its nomination. If this weren't AUGUST's year, my vote'd be for THE SEAFARER.
Thanks so much for writing out your thoughts
It was a long question, and required long answers -- I appreciate the time people took
The Richard-is-blind point is a good one -- I had thought of it, but maybe not given it enough weight
It's nice to have other theatre fans to bounce ideas off of
I'm so happy I found this site -- you guys are great

fosca...that's the reason I started posting here. Nothing like sharing ideas with people who appreciate the same art form.
Me glad, also!
Disclaimer: I intentionally wrote above line for funny purposes only!...honest, I'm not an English major, but I do have good grammar (winston...?) :)

Of course I'm glad Seafarer is nominated but very sorry that Ciarán Hinds is not. In fact I think the five actors worked very well together.
As for changing things, I remember that Ciarán Hinds told me that they were responsive to the audience as much as to each other.

Sylvie2, that was quite a nice post. Thanks. :)
Yes, and I hope either this or The 39 Steps wins.
