Posted: 9/28/08 at 2:54amI wish Anita Mui were still alive. I think she would have made a fab Norma for an Asian touring cast. When she was alive, she always said she wished she could do a big musical, and I think the role of Norma would have been right up her alley. They would have to lower the keys a bit, but other than that, she would have been perfect!

No such thing as a "too beautiful" Norma. You have to be able to tell she was a knock-out in her younger days, and make-up can be used to ravage her features a little. As long as she's not that sort of "too beautiful" that is "what do you MEAN you're fifty? You look 17!". :P
I haven't played Norma Desmond but I totally should play Norma Desmond. It's my favourite female role in musical theatre that isn't a mentally retarded soprano (thank you, Adam Guettel).

I've... just realised how that sounds. XD Obviously I'd be a TOTALLY ravaged fifty-year-old Norma and we'd be using the make-up to convince the audience I used to be a smasher. XD

Murphy wouldn't sell 110 buck tickets (or appear on Wednesday nights, Saturday afternoons...Labor Day weekend, Passover, the 4th of July) ...but she'd be swell, finding both the underlying truth and pain, and the overlay of theatricality.
But who would pack the place? Cher.
