And even though Tonkin was a name for one part of Vietnam, as it happens Vietnam was not only settled by Asians but by Polynesians. There are still descendants of Polynesians in the hills there.
Thus Bloody Mary and Liat could appear either Asian or Polynesian and be suitably typed to their roles.
