re: Who would you cast for Sweeney movie?

How many threads are we going to have on this subject?
Been there, done that.

I totally second Meryl Streep and Jamie Bell for Mrs. Lovett and Tobias, respectively.

I'm definitely thinking Heath Ledger or Jude Law as Anthony to bring that sex appeal that Hollywood needs for a project like this to get off the ground.

Sweeney still eludes me... Christopher Walken in the title role?

Some of this list is "Hollywood-ized" and not necessarily my personal faves:

Sweeney-???????
Mrs. Lovette- Bernadette Peters
Anthony- Josh Groban
Johanna- Anne Hathaway
Judge Turpin- Victor Garber
Pirelli- One of the Three Tenors
Tobias- Me re: Who would you cast for Sweeney movie?

Nathan Lane playing the Beadle wouldn't work because you're not supposed to like the Beadle. Lane would make you regret Sweeney killing him off.

Caro's an opera singer who's making the crossover to more popou;ar stuff in Europe. Recently showcased in BBC Music. Great, great voice, wonderful stage presence, consumate actor -- the sort of singer every opera director lives for. Hands down, he would be perfect for this.

And no, gang, I dont thnk you need a "name" to make the film work.

Honestly I think Depp could pull of the acting fine. He is one of the most gifted actors ever. I only question 2 things about his portrayal. He is still a little too young, and young looking. 2, while I believe he can do anything, most of his stuff is too subtle for Sweeney who, even in the film, NEEDS to be demonstrative (sp?). As far as singing goes, Depp has only been a rock singer, so I don't think, even with a ton of voice lessons he could sing it, and he smokes like a chimney.

Sweeney will never get made.

Search Buttons are really cool. You search and then they tell you that there has already been a thread.

Sorry, the idea of a Sweeney Movie being improperly made makes me upset.

Russell Crowe as Sweeney
Meryl Streep as Lovett
Christopher Walken as Judge Turpin
"unknowns" with terrific voices for the rest.

Not sure I see Streep as Lovett. I do, however, think Emma Thompson would be brilliant.

If the movie was going into production today, *I* would have no hesitation in casting George Hearn.

He is not too old yet. And I care more about talent and art than box office.

Maggie Smith? Her age is a problem, and I find it hard to imagine her playing Lovett.

C'mon, if we're gonna do stunt casting, let's go all the way, huh?

Colin Ferrell as Sweeney
Orlando Bloom as the sailor
April Levigne (or the non-anorexic Olsen) as Johanna
Kate Winslet as Mrs. Lovett

Sure, they can dub in all the voices, but they'll have the pretty people actually playing the roles.

Voices? We'll fix that in post-production.
