Why Did Lupone Cut the Can-Can Songs from Her Album?
#0Why Did Lupone Cut the Can-Can Songs from Her Album?
Posted: 4/25/06 at 12:32pmI recall these songs being on the early tracklist (and in the show they're based on), and today when I look at the list of songs, no Can-Can numbers! Why! I was excited the was recording at least part of her great encores triumph. What happened?

Maybe they didn't fit well with the rest of the songs? Most singers record more than they are able to use on any given recording anyway - I mean, I doubt that the Cole Porter estate vetoed them or something dramatic like that.
Unless Arthur Laurents is executing the estate of course...

Posted: 4/25/06 at 12:38pmShe does a Kiss Me Kate song, so I doubt the Porter estate gives a crap. I wouldn't care, but they announced the tracklisting with the Can-Can numbers months ago. They fit into her show, so I don't get why they can't fit on here. It's not like 16 songs would have made the disc run over. Ugh Patti!

Well it depends on how...slow...Patti...sings...those...torch...songs..
She could go over the limit with 8 songs if she sings them like Streisand's last Broadway record.

Posted: 4/25/06 at 12:43pmWell, the sample tracks on Amazon prove that she is singing them quite slow...so that could be it...but not as slow as Streisand (which I don't think is humanly possible).

Posted: 4/25/06 at 1:24pmIf she sings them as slowly as she sang them at Carnegie Hall last year, it'll be a two disc set. I wanted so much to like that concert...maybe it just wasn't the right venue for it...especially from the cheap seats. Any thoughts?

Posted: 4/25/06 at 1:52pmI would have chosen "I Love Paris" over a couple of those songs.

Didn't she already do some Can-Can songs on Heat Wave? Perhaps that's why?

Posted: 4/25/06 at 2:24pmHeatwave was an album of Irving Berlin songs, not Cole Porter.

Maybe its because those songs are not torch songs, per se. Though a ballad, I Love Paris is a love song to Paris. C'est Magnifique comes the closest, but didn't fit with the rest of the CD. AND..this is a 2-act show condensed to 1 CD.
I agree it would've been nice to hear her on those songs again, but we shall survive.
Perhaps we can look forward to an all Sondheim Cd reprising the roles she's done in concert over the past few years. If you want to campaign for something, campaign for THAT!
