"What I don't get about Fantine is why is Cosette so far away? Couldn't Fantine board her in the town she was working in? And couldn't Fantine tell people that her husband had died? Couldn't she at least steal a loaf of bread?"

They explain this in the novel. Fantine can't afford to keep Cosette in town and she sees how well the Thenardiers care for their own daughters--it seems like a good fit to her.

Jimmy, what are you doing here in the middle of the night? It's almost 9 PM!

The reason they hated her is because they saw her job at hosting the Oscars.

They didn't do so well with Gavroche. In the book, wasn't he the son of the Thenardiers? I don't think they ever make that connection in the musical.

If anyone ever tells you that you put too much Parmesan cheese on your pasta, stop talking to them. You don't need that kind of negativity in your life.

You're right: in the novel, it is explained that Mme. Thenardier treat her daughters like queens and her sons like trash, which is how Gavroche ended up on the streets; his mom simply didn't bother to notice that he was gone.
