Why is "The Producers" Popular?

Okay well I saw the Producers on bway but not with Lane and Broderick (is that spelled right?) and I must say although it was funny, the actors seemed like they were just imitating the OBC and it was just not as good as the real thing. The movie, in my opinion was MUCH better since it did have Lane and Broderick, and was very funny. I wasn't completely thrilled with the broadway production without the OBC but it was still funny (a bit redundant but funny) and overall enjoyable. It was easier to pick up on a lot of the jokes in the movie, I thought, and the movie was definitly great and very similar to the show. So I give them both a thumbs up, but I can see how certain people wouldn't like that kind of humor or just not get it, and so they should just move on and get over it and let those of us who do get it, enjoy it. re: Why is 'The Producers' Popular?

Personally I think it had a fairly weak score, and though it was entertaining, the actors seemed to be working far too hard - they only just stopped short of screaming "Look! Isn't this funny? We're being funny!" at the audience. I suppose that's just the style - Brooks isn't known for subtlety re: Why is 'The Producers' Popular?

"Susan Stroman is an incredible talent. When you pair her genius directing skills with a brilliant cast - Lane, Broderick, Beach, Bart and Brad Oscar - along with the twisted, insane and BRILLIANT mind of Mel Brooks, all you can get is success."

I love ilovetheatertrash. couldn't agree more.

The show is pure Brooks. You either like him or you don't. The humor is loud and obnoxious, which works better on the stage.

I think that a reason why this show is liked so much is that it's one of the shows about producing a show. It's also the name recognition with Mel Brooks and it's very, very funny. I don't know why alot of people hate it, but if you do, then you clearly forget the lyric during "Goodbye"- If you think it stinks, keep your big mouth shut"

Okay, I agree that it's a little overrated, but I love it and think it deserves to be as popular as it is.

The Full Monty deserved Best Score. Give The Producers everything else. But Full Monty had a kick-ass tuneful unique score, and it deserved recognition.

Foster, THE PRODUCERS' score was ENTIRELY appropriate for the show. It carried the show, the lyrics were witty and wonderful, the tunes were very memorable (years later, I'm still singing a few of them) and couldn't have fit the musical more. It was the perfect score for the plot.

Lorelai, thank you. I'm glad someone actually read that post.

I'll say it before and say it again - Susan Stroman, Lane, Broderick and Mel Brooks = where can you go wrong?

A brilliant, comedic masterpiece.
