Personally, I think the score meshes wonderfully with the book. I don't know how much more meshed with the book you can get than "Funeral Sequence" or "Free." Sondheim feels the score should have been more low comedy to be in style with the book, but at the same time he talks about how elegantly phrased the dialogue is. He's right about that, and his score fits right in.
