Why is Hollywood doing weird attempts to promote musicals and Broadway?

Has anyone else noticed that recently Hollywood has been doing strange attempts to promote musicals like all the Disney Channel musicals like High School musical, or the 2009 Oscar Performance honoring movie musicals that had stars like Zac Efron and Beyonce singing, and now the VMA stuff with West Side Story? Anybody else have any thoughts on this?
Personally I think its nice that they're doing it but I also think the way there doing it is kinda weird...not that I can really think of other ways of doing it, but there must be some that don't require Taylor Swift singing "Tonight"...

They're trying to get the younger viewers because high numbers of younger views means more Ad revenue, and therefore more money in their pockets. They know kids are interested in that right now, so they're just trying to reel them in is all.

The Oscars this year paid tribute to many movie releases of 2009, regardless of a nomination or not, as part of the reimagining of the yearly telecast. Movie musicals was one of the genres represented. Vanessa and Zac were in one of the most successful movie musicals this year and Beyonce also starred in another movie. That was also the reason why Amanda and Dominic represented Mamma Mia!, another hit movie musical.
This year's telecast presented different genres, one of which would be the movie musical ( in contrast to comedy, action/adventure, et al) as well as the process of making films. The movie musical tribute covered early musicals ( Top Hat) to the most recent ones. Some of them were movie versions of stage musicals but some originated as movies by themselves.

Uh ..... they each were in a major Hollywood musical where they sang, so why's that worth pointing out?
