#0Why is it named Romance?
Posted: 5/1/05 at 11:59pmI saw the matinee of Romance today and was hoping someone could tell me why the show is named Romance? Can anyone shed light on this? I don't get it at all. Thanks.

Posted: 5/2/05 at 12:03amThere was a boy in a thong, but that's about it. Butt cheeks, nothing more. There are some boxers and undershirts, but nothing sexual about those.

Posted: 5/2/05 at 12:07amthanks....a friend saw it a few days ago and said it was "Super dirty" -- i hadn't heard anything like that so I wasn't sure.

Posted: 5/2/05 at 12:08amFYI -- Today's evening performance was the final one of the run.

Posted: 5/2/05 at 12:21amNo, there was nothing "super dirty" about the show at all. I'm not even sure how that could be inferred unless your friend is really conservative and offended by homosexuality, butt cheeks, and the bulge in the thong.

Hmm..far from. That's interesting.
Sorry I missed this show -- sad to let any Mamet just bleep by your radar.

Posted: 5/2/05 at 12:46amWell f*ck was used quite liberally and ethnic slurs were used throughout so maybe that's what your friend meant by dirty.

I find tank tops and boxers to be pretty sexual, on the right guy.

Posted: 5/2/05 at 1:06amNO NO NO NO NO! The boxers only make a brief appearance (no pun intended) and it's not sexual at all! So stop the threadjacking! :)

Posted: 5/2/05 at 3:53pmha - no problemo. Back to the original question, does anyone have a clue about the title of this show, or were you as confused as I was?

Romance was poorly written, bottom-of-the-barrel Mamet. None of the dialogue even remotely sang. The gratuitous cursing (no surprise there) and uninspired chaos were unfunny. The title was the least of it's problems. I erased it all from my memory as I left the theater.

It was Beckett chanelled thru Mamet and there was a LOT of static!!
Seriously tho I thought the title refered to the typical "Romantic " elements of say a screwball comedy only in this case- boy gets boy & everybody is happy. ( or stoned)
Dirty is not even remotely a discription i would use. There is a lot of swearing and I must say the performers are good esp given how little ther is for them to go with. Def NOT a major Mamet work in fact I think it was just a playwriting exercise.

FWIW, I completely agree w/ you midtowngym. I thought the prosecuting attorney was particularly good and everyone else was fine, but the play was just painful. No plot. Slurs and shouting for no reason other than to get a rise out of people. It just gave me a headache. The audience I was with was cracking up and I think I laughed twice (and one was the prat-fall by thong boy in the courtroom).
I see how there could 'maybe possibly, but not really' be romantic elements throughout the play, but did not see enough to warrant the title be named "Romance." Maybe that was just it. Thanks.
