Posted: 2/13/06 at 7:17amThat was one reason I kept arguing they should make a new recording - that and all of the changes they made to the score, not to mention they had the theatre orchestra rather than an expanded one...

wait i am confused, i thought it was recorded live and then done in the studio too?
Why is there two versions of Get Away With Anything?

Posted: 2/15/06 at 4:03amSadly, with it flopping so - I think the recording we have is all to see the light of day - at least for 25 or so years and that is only if they deem it revival material then.

Posted: 2/15/06 at 5:48amIt was all recorded live except for the "You Can Get Away with Anything" in the show, which was recorded in the studio because the laughter of the audience was VERY noticable. At the end they did but the song as it was recorded live that night, which is why we have two versions.

Actually, there were other sections that were rerecorded as well, though there is no indication which ones. Any section that audience noise came through was rerecorded. I believe that is on the album information - don't have it right in front of me now to tell you where though. Sorry.
I didn't notice the echoing, though I don't doubt it probably is there. I was fortunate enough to actually be in the audience opening night (up in the nosebleed section - upper balcony). The recording really captures the performance that night, and I enjoy the cast recording more for the fact that I am reliving the show as I got to see it.
I did see the show again much later, so will also say this, that most of the performances were much improved. The actors had really grown into the parts. While I enjoy the cast recording, I almost wished they had waited at least a few weeks into the performances to record. I enjoyed MC's performance as Fosco but only got to see him opening week (saw the understudy in January 2005 and Anthony Andrews in May 2005). From what I have heard of his performance, I think I would have enjoyed MB's as well, though I was unable to see him in the show. I always enjoy seeing different interpretations - variety is the spice of life after all. MC's "you can get away with anything" was extrememly funny, and the recording really doesn't capture it, as you miss all the onstage antics.
I enjoyed Maria's performance as well, though I think what I remember her most for is how gracious she was at the stage door in London.
