Posted: 10/30/03 at 9:42pmI'm glad Chenoweth is getting praise for her role. All my friend has been telling is "Idina is going to win the Tony, Idina is the best, etc. etc. etc." -- She's liked Idina from RENT. Idina is a great belter and all, but I can't wait to see Chenoweth -- they said she uses her 4 octave range in the show, which is quiet impressive. I loved her as Sally in Charlie Brown!

I had some hope for WICKED but from what I've read and the video clip I just saw and heard that hope is going up in green smoke.
Where's the magic?
Yours for a better Broadway.

Well, I guess BOY GEORGE has written the best score of a new musical this season. ![]()
Come on people, admit it, the score for TABOO is gorgeous.
tacky, Horsey, to dance on the bad reviews of others#31

Is this really the place to post a push for another show? Wicked's curtain is barely down, the crepe-hanging's begun, and you're telling us to appreciate TABOO? I don't care if you're a publicist for Rosie or not -- to me it's just tacky to gloat on the bad reception afforded another show. No matter what one feels about the Schwartz score, it was years in the making, and it's a sad night to see a much loved composer -- the man who gave us "Day by Day" -- fail.
I hope TABOO is brilliant and that it pleases many. But it won't be more so because WICKED didn't.

Sunset Blvd, Passion, Titanic? those three shows also won Tonys for best score and best Musical (1995, 1994 and 1996 respectively, I believe)
Actually 94, 95 & 97. But anyways, Titanic and Passion won msotly because there wasn't much competition. Sunset Boulevard won because there was NO competition. It was the only new musical that season so it won by default.

"The man who gave us 'Day by Day'?"
The mind boggles.

Posted: 10/31/03 at 2:40amSorry, but Chenoweth is way overrated here. Her role is just a supporting role blown up because the critics like her. She offers some comedic moments in the show...thats about it. This is far from an earthshattering performance and nothing at all that will be remembered in the annalls of theatre, unlike the way Brantley's review reads.

How anyone can think these scores "lacked merit" defies belief. Both "Titanic" and "Passion" had scores that were so lacking in merit thay they won Tony awards for Best score!!!!
"Passion" in particular, has a truly fantastic score - one of Sondheim's best - and he's the best there is.

I don't recall any Schwartz score being embraced by the critics.
This certainly didn't hamper the success of Godspell, The Magic Show or Pippin.
There are Schwartz songs I love such as "I'd like to be a Lion Tamer" from The Magic Show and "Magic To Do" from Pippin.
I remember the score from Pippin took a beating from most major critics, who forever made Pippin a "Bob Fosse" show as opposed to a Stephen Schwartz show. Many discussed how the wonderful staging masked a very mediocre book and score. Many find the Pippin score inspired and delightful.
I hope the same is true of the score from WICKED. I am looking forward with great anticipation to hearing it.
good reminders, Teacher#37
Posted: 10/31/03 at 11:13amYes, Schwartz was beaten up bigtime for Pippin, yet people bought the record and "Corner of the Sky" is a piano bar favorite -- something unforseen, no doubt, in 1973. I was smacked above for invoking Godspell's "Day by Day" -- hey, that's okay, what boggles one mind sometimes engages another (every post pushes somebody's buttons, what the hell). But it's one of the best-known songs of the past 30 years. Guess I feel Schwartz had a bad night, and I wanted to remember that some of his tunes have made many people happy.

Posted: 10/31/03 at 11:17amI adore Kristin, but I tend to agree with Peter. Yes, Kristin has the saucy soubrette role (and the fun character songs) that makes her an instant audience favorite. But I did not miss her when she was off stage, as Indina plays the more compelling character. My problem with Indina were her songs were kinda one-note-yearning-ballads that sounded alike that and actually took away from Elphelba. When she wasn't singing, she acted her ass off on the Gershwin stage. If Indina had better songs to sing, the critical balance might weigh more in her favor.

I heard that Kristen is being considered for an opera based on Alice In Wonderland? so maybe that is why there are rumors of her leaving Wicked.
I am hoping that she is in it for awhile, I have not seen it yet. I agree with John I am not going to listen to the critics on this one I am just happy that something new and creative has come to broadway instead of another revival.

Posted: 10/31/03 at 1:07pmLike THE BOY FROM OZ, WICKED should prove to be a popular hit based on good of mouth and they do have a heck of an ad campaign. AIDA, THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE, & MAMMA MIA all received raves for their leading ladies and generally negative reviews for everything else about the shows but they have proved to be long-running crowd pleasers.

did anyone see the new york times article on the show. I didn't get to read it all the way but posted on my voice teachers board is the article with everything about kristen highlighted, and i swear it could possible be the most flatering article i've ever seen for one performer.
I think the jist of the article was that the show was blah but anticipating her return to the stage everytime she left made it worth seeing.
will
