I'm not being negative, I'm being *sober* about it.
(I low-balled because I was too lazy to get the exact figure and knew it was 17,000-something.)
If 'The Producers' and 'Hairspray' two Broadway shows that have gotten the most exposure in years (both shows were EVERYWHERE when they opened) and yet still can't sell cast albums, what does that say about theater? It says what I already know: that no one cares about musicals, other than the hardcore audience. This is why prices are going up, producers are trying to suck the same revenue out of the same dwindling audience base.
If this is a 'hit' recording then it's further proof that we're less relevant than we need to be and if our big hits can't even get attention anymore -- what sort of good omen is that for those who want theater to be more than just the big money hits?

Yeah, JohnPopa, what's the deal? No one said that Wicked's CD sales were rivaling those of Clay Aiken's, just that it's doing very well for a cast recording. Be as pessimistic as you want, I chose to congratulate them. Time will tell if it continues to sell (I believe it will - Wicked is behaving like a big fat hit, and the show itself is surpassing expectations).
I also have no delusions that a Broadway musical will enter very deeply into pop consciousness. I'd prefer that they don't, actually (because of the company they'd then be keeping).

Congrats Cast and Creative Team for a great cast recording. I thought I would post the link, also.

The CD is wonderful. Joel Grey is fantastic but his songs don't appeal to me, so I skip over them. IF he had better material, I'd listen to him a hell of a lot more often.
No Good Deed is my favorite. And I never stop listening to The Wizard And I, even if Carole Shelley does sing in the beginning. She is an amazing addition to the show, and her part there inspires the whole song. Without that whole song, Elphaba would have no reason for singing it.
