When I was at Universal Studios earlier this year I noticed a Wicked Poster on one of the production bungalow's, can anyone tell me what it might have been doing there?

Isn't Universal an investor or something?

As for a movie, I think it would make a great one, but it should go by the book, and not have any music in it.

ya universal helped produce the show..i would also like to see a movie of the book rather then the musical. maybe a tv movie of the musical someday instead. Updated On: 12/21/04 at 12:24 AM

I completely agree.

If they make a movie, have it be based on the novel and NOT the musical.

The novel is outstanding.

My aunt took the Universal tour when she was in California earlier this year. The Wicked poster was up. She said they announced on the tour that Wicked the musical was being planned for a movie. No idea about any definite plans or anything else dealing with it ::shrug:: Maybe she heard wrong.

The novel is much more darker and deeper than the Broadway show.

It's because the concept of Wicked the Musical started out as an idea for a movie through Universal. That's why a lot of the initial readings and workshops were in LA on the Universal lot. When they decided to try it as a stage show, I believe Universal stayed on as an investor.

I think a movie based on the musical could work...as long as they get a new writer on board to actually give depth to the characters and story, even if it means totally re-working the story into a brand new story and incorporating the songs in different situations. I also think it would be great if Schuartz is willing to have some of his songs be made fun of.

I can totally see Glinda trying desperately to think of something profound to say while her heart is breaking and coming up with "there are bridges you crossed you never known you crossed until you crossed..." with Morrible and Fiyero and others looking at each other with confusion over what Glinda has just said.

I think the book is much better, but a movie based on the musical may work better commercially, for the same reasons that the musical is so loosely based on the book. The book has a lot more depth, and a lot of political ideas that had they been translated to the musical, would've made it less... I'm not sure what word I'm looking for, but I'm really tired, so I'll use happy. A lot of the things in the book that didn't make it to the musical simply wouldn't bode well for a musical to turn out the way Wicked did; family-friendly for the most part, and a big tourist seller.

Granted, Lord of the Rings worked as a movie, but I tend to think they'd take the musical route with this one, especially given the wild success of the musical.

But anyway, to answer the question - Universal had a part in producing the musical. That's probably why you saw it.
