re: Wicked to open in Denmark#2
Posted: 12/22/09 at 12:32amFor those of you unfamiliar with Danish, what this basically says is that whereas all other productions of Wicked have been clones of the Broadway staging, this is the first that will be completely new and original, as approved by Stephen Schwartz. It's set to open next season, that's a little exciting!

I hate non replica productions, they always sound like the idea is full of potential but always end up as a hot mess. Just look at the 2 Phantoms and cats. Yuck.
They either cant do a good job with the designs or they end up with a fusion of the original and new ideas that always comes off as being too cheap to do the original so "lets do it as close as possible"

I love the original London production of Into the Woods. I thought it was a brilliant design.

Well those 2 comparisions are not quite what I'm talking about, more so the Into the Woods one since Sondheim shows usually aren't long runners so that lends themselves to new interpretations.
My gripe is well established long runners that are "Frozen" so to speak. Like Cats, Phantom, Lion King, Wicked even. Especially if the original is still running.
They recently had a new verison of Beauty & the Beast in Europe and I felt the same way about that, It just wasn't as good.
Although I guess you have the opposite in shows like Jekyll & Hyde that have had stagings that were far superior than the Broadway run.
I just feel that shows that have established themselves as a particular product with specific branding and a certain "look" should not be changed over when ever someone wants to do so. Although I am aware this triend is kind of recent in the sholw scheme of Musicals, having started with the mega musicals of the 80's and Cam.Mac whose goal was to have the exact same show playing in different cities.

I agree, Justin, because so far, all non-replica productions of these long runners have been done without a creative mindset. They either try to be so different that they lack luster and end up removing themselves from the original intent, or they copy so much that it's a sham.
And say what you will about Phantom's score and book; there is no denying that the Hal Prince staging and Bjornson costumes and scenery and the lighting by Andrew Bridge helped make one of the most creative and spectacular productions of the 20th Century. Their work is for the books.
