Posted: 7/21/04 at 7:23amI dont think she was focused on Kristin. I think she's trying to make her own Glinda but taking what Kristin has done into consideration. Is anyone going to either show today?

I'm going tonight.
My only comment in response to the original post is that at $100 a ticket, I don't think they should have actors who need to 'grow into their roles' or 'work on their acting'...
That being said, I'm looking forward to it, and hope not to compare/contrast too much while I'm watching...

Coloratura.....A soprano who sings elaborate ornamentation containing improvised or written out running passages and trills. Also, an EXTREMELY high soprano, the tessitura range being from the F at the top of the treble staff to a high C, and extending beyond usually to an F or G beyond that.
Think the Queen of the Night aria from the Magic Flute, that's the coloratura trophy song. Mozart loved them.
I'm a coloratura...but I didn't know that until I started university. I didn't even know the word existed. My teacher told me, I pretended I knew what it meant so as not to look like an idiot on my first day, and I went home and looked it up.
Glad to hear JL is doing well. I'll be seeing her in October. I appreciate Cheno's talent but I've never been overly taken with her. I'm looking forward to seeing JL, because truthfully, I know nothing about her- so she should be a pleasent surprise!

Posted: 7/21/04 at 2:07pmThanks so much for the review... I'm very relieved to hear all the good stuff about her, because I used to think that Cheno was irreplacable. So now I'm excited to see the show again. Yay.

Posted: 7/21/04 at 7:00pmSo i heard they had to cut the bubble because she was too big for it. Is that true? I would think they'd just make a bigger bubble.

Posted: 7/21/04 at 7:09pmthey didn't cut it as in remove it from the show, but they seriously cut it up to make her fit inside, its still there though
re: Wicked tonight-review#38
Posted: 7/23/04 at 11:10amJLT did an interview with Broadway.com....in it she talks about the bubble and how they had to CUT into it to make it bigger for her...because Kristen is only about 5 feet tall.

I saw it Wednesday night, and thought she was terrific!
The differences, to my eye, were that she doesn't play it quite as "dumb blonde" as Cheno did - and I got much more of a sense of her wanting to feed her own ambition, which is a very subtle change for the character, but one which I think enhances the story. She was playful and sweet, but with a not-to-be-messed-with core. I like the take.
The only distraction for me was that her voice and Idina's don't blend the same way Cheno and Idina's voices did - which I'm so used to hearing, BUT, I'm sure the blend and timing will 'improve' with time. (After all, they didn't have alot of time to rehearse together). The chemistry between them is great - if you had never seen Cheno you wouldn't miss anything.
George Hearn was a little stiff/unsure on Wednesday night. I adore him, but have to be honest and say that I loved the way Sean McCort played the Wizard when he was on. Looking back, Joel Grey did a good job with a very underdeveloped role.
Joey McIntyre is cute - and has a decent voice, but I really enjoyed Norbert's take on the character. I didn't get the sense, in Act I, that Joey's Fiyero was falling for/taken with Elphaba as much as being unsure of her...
And, just to round it out - I actually like Randy Harrison as Boq. He brings a nice energy to the role.
So - I'll be interested to hear what the rest of you think as you see it...

Posted: 7/23/04 at 12:24pmI agree with Nyadgal. I couldnt quite find the words to describe how Glinda was different but her description of how JLT did it different then Cheno was perfect. I definetly felt for Glinda more with JLT then when I saw it with Cheno. Very subtle but effective approach JLT chose with the character.

This disturbs me:
"We can't all come and go by bubble! Check out Eden! I MISS KRISTIN AND NORBERT!!! forget joel. "
That last part, forget Joel... that really bothers me. Maybe you didn't notice, but that guy was Joel Grey... one of only seven actors to win both the Tony and the Oscar for the same role? Played the lead male character in a Broadway musical that changed Broadway forever? One of the great living legends of our time? You don't just forget things like that... or people. We love you, Joel.

How tall is JLA?
You said she is taller than Idina on stage, so that brings me to my next question, around how tall is Idina? One more, at the end of "What is this feeling?" how do they do that "boo!" "AH!" thing because of their height difference?
re: Wicked tonight-review#46
Posted: 7/24/04 at 4:50pmif 5'4" looks tall on stage i'm officially a giant- i'm a full foot taller than that

Thanks, Pink.
I've talked to people who have seen the show since I did, and they tend to agree that JLT is playing it with more depth than Cheno did.
Sadly, I'm hearing things are getting worse with George Hearn. He's just not 'getting' it. I've always been a fan of his, but I don't think this is the right role for him. Bring back Sean McCort - he brought the Wizard to life!
