M&MG is one of my all time favorite shows. It was big hit on Broadway, won Best Actor & Actress Tonys the year that it came out, and played for quite a few years. It was the first show at the newly built Marquis Theatre, and to this day, was the longest running show there.
It's hysterically funny....adult....whitty....clever, touching and, just a whole hell of a lot of fun.
Where's the revival?

The 1985 London revival (1986 Broadway premiere) was put together by Richard Armitage, who has since passed away. His father Reginald wrote under the pen name Noel Gay and created the original 1937 show. It was short musical and for the revival they interpolated a number of other Noel Gay songs. The revival was off to a good start coming after two really dreadful seasons (84/85 & 85/86) which yielded just one new hit musical: BIG RIVER.
ME AND MY GIRL was the only hit show until LES MISERABLES came along the following March, and it benefitted greatly from an audience hungry for "new" shows (even if this one was 50 years old.)
The show does very well in regional and community theatres but a post-Broadway tour - headed by Tim Curry - performed rather weakly on the road.
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!
I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com
I saw the original Broadway production four times and absolutely adore this charming show. It definitely needs a very charismatic leading man to carry it off.
