Besides the actually winners of the awards last night the telecast had other winners and...well, losers. Here are my picks
LOSER: The opening number. For me it never created a theatrical energy that was big enough to start an award ceremony as bright and bold as the TONYS. Far too sedated to create the excitement to keep viewers watching the whole show. Cute but not funny. It didn't work
WINNER: Angels in America bit about making your speeches short or they will sick her on you...funny and a way to showcase the actual work of the year.
LOSER: The Hosts Groban and Bareilles. They were both relaxed and cool, but lacked the showwoman/man quality to be the MC of an event like this. I was a bit shocked. They both headline concerts and events all the time. They just aren't Tony hosts.
WINNER; Andrew Garfield. Great speech, stood up for gay rights and helped tarnish the opinions out there that a gay man should be playing prior walter and that his performance is far too gay face to do the character justice.
LOSER: NO STAR POWER PRESENTERS! I mean there was barely any broadway starts on that stage. You are telling me they coldn't even get Idina Menzel to present who is in nyc right now doing a play. It was strange.
LOSER: TONY AWARD PRODUCERS, for only including book of a musical on the telecast because Tina Fey might win the award. They've done this before, added a category to the telecast they never deem worthy unless some hollywood icon is nominated. Its gross, disrespectful to the theater artists that are nominated and tacky as F*CK
WINNER: The tony voters choosing Itmar Moses work on The Bands Visit for the best book of musical. It is the only book that was Tony Nominee worthy this year. Tina Fey being paraded around as the savior of broadway this season was such a joke. Itmar deserved it.
WINNER: Laurie Metcalf. Somewhat of a surprise considering most people assumed this was going to Denise Gough for Angels In America. She wins for most stunned. She also deserved it.
LOSER: MEAN GIRLS. The cut/arrangement did them no favors. The number made it look like the worst musical of the nominees.....it is. That score just does not work with the material and it showed big time last night. The whole number looked cheap and cheesy.
The Eh moment of the night.....My Fair Lady.. What a lackluster arrangement and cut. It's much better than this. Don't think they even got a reaction from people. I will say I thought the staging of Get Me To The Church on time makes no sense in this production and I think it really showed when paired with Lauren A's Eliza. It just looks ridiculously camp in comparison. Butz looked like some kind of wild animal with rabies up there.
WINNER: SPONGEBOB SQUARE PANTS. Smart of them to choose the number with Gavin Lee. Hands down the best number and performance in the show. This makes it look much better than it is...sorry, not sorry.
WINNER: Eight times a week parody of chandelier. funny, and actually making fun of something very real in the musical theater community...how do they do eight shows a week!
LOSER: Carousel. Nice to see dance featured on the telecast, truly. But another missed opportunity from the creators/producers of this show to make it seem like we need it on broadway and we need to spend money on it. They should have done a medley. Not having Joshua sing was a serious crime.
WINNER: ONCE ON THIS ISLAND performing and winning best revival. So smart to recreate the round from the The Circle in the Square on that Radio City stage. The cast was electric! And the upset of the night was it winning best revival. well deserved. Hope this translates to ticket sales.
LOSER: The Tony Award Producers for not not included snippets of plays, not capitalizing on harry potter being on broadway, once again cutting score and choreography from the telecast. Its bad enought they dont want to show the more technical awards. boooooo. This did not feel like an event that wanted to honor the material....every moment should be somehow dedicated to the talent of the year.
WINNER: KATRINA LINK AND DAVID YAZBEK. They single handedly made the Band's visit look elegant, lyrical, high brow, romantic. Which it is Ticket sales will go up.
LOSER: The Tony Award Producers on their handling of the honoring of Loyd Webber and Rivera. If you want to honor theater people do it! If you don't, don't! These two legends deserved way more than this
WINNER: The most talked about person of the night. Robert DeNiro for making us all have to google what he said that made the audience go crazy....F*CK TRUMP.
LOSER: Springsteen. The biggest rock star on the planet comes to broadway and plays the piano while he recites a piece of creative writing about his hometown....WTF? Missed opportunity. In the context of his show it probably works brillantly, but with a one off it seemed ridiculous. WE WANT SPRINGSTEEN TO ROCK OUT!
