I saw this on Saturday night and was rather disappointed. The much-discussed projections look like a bad playstation game and do not enhance the mood.
Some of the dramaturgy is just mis-guided: the final scene leaves heroine Maria Friedman abandoned by the hero and her sister without explanation alone on a railway track at night! This is a Victorian lady, bear in mind. It is full of such unlikely events.
Performances are solid, although Michael Crawford is under-used, although the decision to wear facial prosthetics limits his expression considerably.
The music is lush but extremely repetitive.
It's not terrible, but it's not up to ALW's highest standard.
