A Chorus Line, The Wiz and Annie top my list.
Three terrific hit shows... three disastrous films.
You could also add Man of La Mancha.
And although I DO find some redeeming qualities in the film Brigadoon, it is a "disaster" compared to the stage show.

Millie the movie isn't so bad... if you view it as a parody of a parody. It's actually pretty funny in a twisted way.
...Also if you smack your head against the wall, and drink an entire bottle of vodka first, it's the best movie ever made.

GYPSY and MAME are, I think, two of the most exciting movies ever, and the film versions, with their nonsinging leads, crapped all over the show's reputations.
I also think it's terribly sad that no one knows these days how great PAL JOEY was as a Broadway show--everyone only knows the miserable Sinatra/Rita Hayworth movie.
And while I've never really cared for CAMELOT, I think it deserved better than to have its fine score slaughtered by Richard Harris and Vanessa Redgrave on film.

Oh, and I almost forgot (and this is for the last time)--
"Cabaret" the movie was infinitely better than any incarnation of the stage show, and I am not going to debate this any more. Anyone is free to hold a different opinion and/or to plague me with your Liza-bashing posts, but you will simply be wasting your time with me.

Posted: 11/12/05 at 11:29pmI actually love the movie version of Millie; I think it's hilarious, and I was incredibly disappointed by the stage adaptation. They completely missed the humor. What fun is Mrs. Meers without her "ShooShow"? (She doesn't say shooshow in the stage version, right?)

I like the "Millie" movie....they even have some songs that I wish had been put in the show.
like I loved when Carol Channing sung "Jazz Baby"....she was absolutely GREAT with that song...and she should sing more jazz songs.
Mary Tyler Moore and Julie Andrews did a great job and the jokes were really funny.
Here's some one I didn't like
Guy's and Dolls....except for Vivian Blane
Brigadoon
Finians Rainbow
Paint Your Wagon
Gentelman Prefer Blondes

billy elliot - i love the movie, but the musical is far better, because of elton's commitment
mary poppins - i love the movie, but love the musical as it is based on the books and there's villains
grease - hate the movie

Annie was just so terrible to me. At least it had a very nice (IMO) television version a little while back. For me, that makes up for the disastrous movie version from the 80's.
Others:
The Wiz
A Chorus Line
Pal Joey
Man of La Mancha
Jesus Christ Superstar
A Little Night Music
In terms of Cabaret. I think the movie is superior to the original stage script. However, I absolutely ADORE the revival version. It's very gritty and "in your face" without losing any of it's edge.

ANNIE (all caps, thats how bad it is)
Besides from turning the vocally and dramatically difficult role of Annie into something vocally and dramatically challenging as The Muppet Show, making the villian well...nice, and changing the story- the cut half the score! This is the worst film adaptation of a fairly good musical. Worst!
I'd have to go with Camelot next. They hired the most talentless stars MUSICALLY (they all can act, that much I can say) and put them in something that opera companies often perform. The costumes look like someones vomit and half the second act's music was cut making it longer and more boring than the play's second act.
And yes, A Chorus Line, no explanation needed.

And there's more...
I think Cabaret it an excellent film. I think the play, while exiting conceptually, is dull in most scenes, especially most of act 2.

I LOVED the Millie movie... and the show.
As for your question, I thought ANNIE was kind of boring as a stage show, but the movie is SLIGHTLY better all around.

Everyone is saying Annie... and yes I agree for the most part. But some people have to admit that Carol Burnett is genius in that role, and makes the movie for me.
I strongly deslike A Chorus Line.
As for Cabaret. I think the movie and the musical are two different entities. The movie has the some of the same songs, but ultimately different plot twists. Don't get me wrong, I love the movie, and Joel Grey and Liza are brilliant, but it is different. The musical has more endearing characters, which brings a more humane feel to it. Not that gasing people is humane.
