"Not the movie arrangements. Seth Rudetsky arranged them around the performers, see Shoshanna Bean and her whistle tone, etc. also after doing the concert, theyonly had a take or two to record them, and Rudetsky couldn't be there for all of it, so sometimes things got missed, like a blah ending by the background singers at the end of one number, actually I think that was also Bean's I Believe in Love
For me I would say the worst cast album is Spider-man Turn off the Dark. They don't even bother to put the songs in the same order as the show
Agreeing with Movidude. While the actual concert relied way more heavily on some of the film arrangements than the album, the album itself uses entirely original arrangements by Rudetsky, occasionally with a similar flavor (see, for example, "Sodomy," where the differences are minimal).
Eric, sorry to continue the argument (a day later), as you are completely valid with your points, but Cats was a different being. It was already a hit in London and Memory was already being sung all around the world before opening in NY and being recorded with the OBC. The fact that the OBC was actually in question at the time, as I recall.
Dreamgirls had a big R&B hit with "And I'm Telling You..." but that hadn't already happened when the album was recorded. It was Jennifer Holliday and her performance that catapulted her and the song via TV shows. There was no internet, so no way to gage beforehand what would hit or miss.
I'm sure with hindsight, even Geffen wishes he had taken the chance and recorded the full score, but he made a business decision and it worked.
Nothing could make the Cats score listenable.

The Wicked recording is lifeless, dull and sounds awful!
I quite agree and Wicked is one my favorite shows!

I always thought that Dance A Little Closer was recorded in an aeroplane hanger.
Footloose. I f*cking hate this show with a passion, but good Lord, i find nails on a chalkboard more pleasing than the score. The score is terrible and it sounds so ridiculously plastic.
