Eric, sorry to continue the argument (a day later), as you are completely valid with your points, but Cats was a different being. It was already a hit in London and Memory was already being sung all around the world before opening in NY and being recorded with the OBC. The fact that the OBC was actually in question at the time, as I recall.
Dreamgirls had a big R&B hit with "And I'm Telling You..." but that hadn't already happened when the album was recorded. It was Jennifer Holliday and her performance that catapulted her and the song via TV shows. There was no internet, so no way to gage beforehand what would hit or miss.
I'm sure with hindsight, even Geffen wishes he had taken the chance and recorded the full score, but he made a business decision and it worked.
