While thinking of the movie adaptation of "Proof" that's been made...I began to ponder the possibility of a movie adaptation of "The Tale of the Allergist's Wife" which is one of my favorite plays. The play is so witty and the comedy is just genius. Charles Busch has written many screenplays and I'm sure he would have no problem turning the play into a movie himself.
Marjorie Taub would be a great role for some of our great movie actresses. Names like Meryl Streep, Swoosie Kurtz, or even Carol Burnett come to mind. Lee Green would also be a great role for actresses like Goldie Hawn or Jennifer Coolidge. Frieda would be a great role for Olympia Dukakis or even Estelle Getty if she were up to it.
I personally think, with the right cast, the play would make a great film. As a play, it is certainly superior to a lot of movies that have come out. I wonder if the idea has been or is being tossed around in Hollywood. I would love to see this happen.

Absolutely Foa! Not sure about your casting, but it's a great show and I'd love to see it done. I even found myself thinking that it would make a darn interesting musical in the right hands.
Of course some of the names I listed were names that immediately popped into my head and are definitely debateable.

I would love to see a "First Wive's Club" reunion of Bette Midler as Marjorie and Goldie Hawn as Lee - with Dustin Hoffman or Elliot Gould as the husband.
I can't think of who should play Marjorie's mother. Estelle Getty would have been perfect, but she's apparantly in the deep stages of Alzheimer's.
I thought she has Parkinson's.

She does have Parkinsons. What a shame, too. She'd be GREAT!
Totally!!! I think Busch's writing is stellar and he has a way to adapt plays into movie script very well.
I would love to see that part in drag.
Harvey, please!
Actually, I could see Bruce Vilanch as being killer in that role. He is the one liner ad lib expert. As long as he dyed his hair gray and did not grow his beard again.
He would be hilarious.

I don't think the part would work in drag. The mother is supposed to be small and frail. Olympia Dukakis would be great in the role.
Foa,
Yes, your right. I just love drag.
