Writers, Directors and Actors on peer's work

For example, what did Sondheim and Prince think about Chicago and A Chorus Line, two shows that competed against Pacific Overutres? ave there ever been times where a person in the theatre has publicly spoken against a piece competing against their own?

well, I don't know about anything Sondheim said, but It does make me think of this:
In Merrily we roll along, in the song "it's a hit", Sondheim writes "it's funny girl, fiddler, and Dolly Combined" the funny thing is that all of those huge hit shows opened in the same year as Sondheim's biggest flop, "Anyone can whistle"-1964. so I like to think that that was a little "screw you" to those shows, especially since one of the subjects that MWRA deals with is artists and raises the question of "do you have to be a sell out to be successful"
