I went with one of our new interns at work to see Xanadu tonight. I didn't realize that tomorrow is the show's 1 year anniversary, so I was excited to be there this evening. The first thing I noticed was that the house is selling the glowsticks in the lobby for $1.00. As much as I love this show, I think that I will call 1-800-FOR-GLOW and buy in bulk!
I was glad to see the theater almost completely full. Hopefully this is a good sign that we'll be able to keep going back for more fun well into the fall!
Curtis came on to start the show and I didn't realize that his costume would be different than Cheyeene's. He wears a t-shirt with sleeves as opposed to the tank top. I really enjoyed his version of Sonny. His Sonny is less Southern California and more of a loveable kind of guy. I think he does great and I enjoyed his vocals throughout the show.
We had Kate Loprest playing the part of Euterpe/Thetis. She's gorgeous and has a beautiful voice.
The audience clearly had great time. I was sitting next to 2 guys who were laughing so hard I thought they would bust a gut! I loved it because I felt like the whole section around me had a serious case of the giggles...you know, when you start laughing, and then everyone else is laughing, and soon you can't stop laughing because everyone else won't stop laughing. It's like infectious or contagious or something. Regardless, these guys seemed to come unglued anytime Kerry Butler said ANYTHING. I loved it!
Evil Woman...this song and Fool are my least favorite. HOWEVER...Mary and Jackie kill me every time. I love going back to see a show after one two times because you get to see new things. These pros deliver the goods...and then some....every time!
I enjoyed watching the interaction between Kerry and Curtis during "All Over the World". It was great to see the interaction between Kira and Curtis' Sonny. It's subtle...but I think that they must have some up with some things that they do, that Kerry and Cheyeene don't do. Curtis does a breakdance thing where he spins around on his back that was great.
One part that I always look forward to is Jackie's improv. Tonight, she spoke to several senior patrons sitting on the stage. It was hilarious. She said something along the lines of "...Hi ladies....something about how they were night owls and no matinees for these girls!" The audience loved it.
Mary still uses then line about Patti Lupone alienating her first child at the end. I can't wait to see what the next reference will be. Something about horses perhaps?
As usual, a great time was had by all. One of these days I'm going to do the on stage seating. I tried to get it for tonight, but was unable to do so when I got our tickets on line on Monday night. I hope they don't put me in the seats where Jackie directs her improv though! I'd hate to think of what she'd come up with about how I looked or what I was wearing!
