And though I am a little disappointed, I'm ok with that. I'm not shouting "foul play" or concocting conspiracy theories. I'm not claiming the Tony voters are wrong or out of their minds or that they should be ashamed of themselves. I'm not ripping apart every other show that won awards simply because they weren't my personal favorite. And I'm not cackling like a bitch that shows didn't take home an award I felt they didn't deserve in the first place. I simply accept the fact that Tony voters gave awards to their own choices rather than my own. It happens every year. And you know what? That is ok.

I think In the Heights hit a lot of heartstrings. It was an original idea, and both Cry Baby and Xanadu were ideas taken from movies. Passing Strange was just, well, scary. I think it was well deserved, and I give Lin a lot of credit for his work.
But I wasn't super excited about any of the nominees this year. Of all of them, I'm glad Heights won.

Hopefully, "Xanadu" gets a boost from a very good performance !!
I just cant believe (reading other "Xanadu" threads), how people that have not seen "ITH" could say that they are shocked that it won Best Musical. Dont you have to see it first in order to judge it?

Posted: 6/16/08 at 12:50pmI don't know if the performance sold tickets or not, but it certainly was the best of the evening, in my opinion. And not just because I like the show. I thought it sounded and looked simply wonderful.

Posted: 6/16/08 at 12:59pmI'm sad it didn't win, not because I think it is better than ITH, but becuase I thought a Tony win might equal better ticket sales and a long run on Broadway. I want this show to stay!

I think Xanadu will last till Labor Day.
I'm less optimistic about A Catered Affair,Passing Strange and Cry Baby.

I'll admit, I want to see both "Xanadu" and "In the Heights." I will be seeing "In the Heights" on the 26th because it was what I could pull together. But definitely, the performance from "Xanadu" last night makes me want to see it too. I just think the idea of them roller skating seems really cool. Plus, it was just a very well put together performance. I also am sold on the clips I have listened to of the cast recording. So that will be my next mission of shows to see.

If it were up to me, but then... no shock here.
Xanadu was the only new musical I thoroughly enjoyed this season. Passing Strange had a great story line (Best book! yeah), but the music, and as for ITH, I have no interest, since I can't stand rap.
Young Frank and Cry Baby were both disappointing follow ups.
All in all, a crappy year for new musicals.

Posted: 6/16/08 at 6:01pmThe one positive thing about Xanadu not winning Best Musical is that we won't have to get pummeled with the millions of posts about how they only won because of their unfair campaigning.

Posted: 6/16/08 at 6:04pmYes, but now we'll get pummelled by show queens who think that excessive camp and Cheyenne Jackson's body alone make a show deserving of Best Musical.

Posted: 6/16/08 at 6:16pmI thought Xanadu deserved it more than any other show. I thought overall, it was the strongest. Passing Strange has its' flaws, and is clearly not for everyone (as much as I loved it), In the Heights has a very weak book, but Xanadu, IMO, has a catchy, hummable score, a tight and witty book, and a great cast giving great performances. Also, it got the best reviews of the four nominees. It's more than excessive camp and Cheyenne in shorts (Especially to me, since I preferred James Carpinello), and I was really hoping it'd take the big prize.
