Y'think Barbra's too old? Yet?

I think tow things about BARBRA in that role!
1) YES- she is too old.
2) She doesnt seem the type to do a revival or something old revised...she seems pretty gung-ho on doing things that are new...gotta go...sound off!

It was on Broadway many years ago. Tovah Feldshuh was Yentle. I did not see it and do not know if it was in any way similar to the movie, though it is based on the Singer story.

If the one and only person who has a singing role just happens to be Barbra that's enough! (Dayenu!)
For those who don't get the Hebrew joke I'm sorry. It just seemed fitting given the topic under discussion.

The stage version with Tovah Feldshuh was the same story, but no songs.

And she received her second Tony nomination for it.

Yes, Yentl was a Broadway play.
I think that the story works very well with one character singing. We are seeing the story through her eyes, knowing her secret. I think if anyone were to bring the movie score to the stage, it would be interesting to see it kept as only her singing. However, that may not be an easy task 8 times a week. Otherwise, I would also enjoy seeing it expanded for other characters to sing. But my preference is how it is done in the film.
I think Anne Runolfsson would be a nice choice. Or, um (maybe Idina). BUT, even better would be a great unknown!

I'll say Idina Menzel -- it's Broadwayworld and I think it's a rule that I have to say her right now ...... (though to be fair she might be a good pick....)

Well, we have to remember that the original stage version was NOT a musical, so by reviving it you would probably end up with a great story. As far as who should play the role, I don't know. They would probably get some Hollywood newbie like Scarlett Jo Hansen, or whatever her name is.
Now, if they chose to stage the movie version with music, we'd probably be disappointed with the casting, or at least I would. We'd end up with Brook Shields, Christina Appelgate, or god forbid one of the WICKED Squeakers.

Why does everyone here think Idina Menzel can play EVERY part on broadway...she is good, but not that good. I think her voice is too pop for that role anyways. I would like to see someone completely unheard of. A show completely sung by one person is interesting...but I just remember watching the movie and hoping Mandy (although I don't like him too much) Patinkin would break in. Bernadette Peters did it for Song & Dance in the 80's. So I doubt it would be IMPOSSIBLE. I'm happy with everyone's opinoins...Oh, and Tovah is too old too.

Absolutley. Tovah is past her prime where that role is concerned. And as far as Idina, I don't think she's talented at all. Like many of the voices on broadway it's wimpy and believed to be good only because she can scream with it. Just like everyon's favorite Checonoweth. I can't stand either of them, but as long as she gives a luke warm performance every night, every young girl on here is going to think she's perfect for everything including being a wet nurse to thier children.

YOu are mean...but don't worry, so am i...i like that quality...no screwing around, just give your opinion. Thank goodness for you. I personally think that both those girls are adorable. But I agree that young ones all over, whether girls, or gay little boys will LOVE them and think they can do no wrong. The thing I don't like about Idina is that she spends many of her performances warming up her vioce...*gasp* stop the insanity...did he say that?
