This, with Moscow, makes 4 shows that have folded so far. Scary

well, I expected it, but my God this is depressing.
How many broadway houses are gonna be dark by the end of this month? It seems like a lot to me, but I haven't really followed it closely before. Isn't it 5? Moscow, Gypsy, Taboo, Anna, and Never Gonna Dance? That does not include the closing of Cabaret either. It'd depressing to mention all of them in one post.

I was going to say...I think it's 5 shows closing this month...so sad
It is a combination of many things
1, Normal slow Jan/Feb/March
2. Abnormally rotten weather
3. High prices
4. Our good friends the critics
5. Inability of Jimmy Smits to draw

Well on the bright side, Assassins replaces Cabaret and FOTR opens at the Minskoff. Bombay Dreams is a third. So we gain three houses back. Mabye they should bring over Springer from London. We are slowly running out of options here.
It has been an incredibly brutal winter, with lagging ticket sales for a lot of shows. But the next couple of months are as busy as usual, with by my count, 13 openings before the Tony cut-off. (And with the buzz on Paul Rudnick's Valhalla, I wouldn't be surprised to see it make a last minute move to Broadway).
The roster below features four new plays, five play revivals, two new musicals, and two musical revivals. (Or three new musicals, depending on how Assassins qualifies for the Tonys). It looks like a pretty healthy mix, at least on paper!
Feb 19 - Drowning Crow - Biltmore Theatre
Feb 26 - Fiddler on the Roof - Minskoff Theatre
Mar 4 - King Lear - Vivian Beaumont Theatre
Mar 25- Twentieth Century - American Airlines Theatre
Mar - Duet - Circle in the Square
Apr 1 - Sly Fox - Barrymore Theatre
April 8 - Match - Plymouth Theatre
April 15 - Sixteen Wounded - Walter Kerr Theatre
Apr 22 - Assassins - Studio 54
Spring 2004 - A Raisin in the Sun - Theatre TBD
April 25 - Jumpers - Brooks Atkinson Theatre
April 29 - Bombay Dreams - Broadway Theatre
May 2 - Caroline, or Change - Eugene O'Neill Theatre

I might sound a bit selfish- but I'm glad that I saw AitT, so it's okay for me if it's closing now.
Just joking...I really liked the material, and I thought that the acting was superb (most of it). It's a very intelligently written play, and I wish that it could have been more recognized in the theater world. That's sad that it's closing- try to see it before it does!

You know I don't want anything to close... but there are things I'd rather see close--for instance: Hasn't Aida seen its day? I wish that would close before Anna...
While AIDA hasn't done well lately, it's obviously because of the weather, because it usually does pretty well. The chances that the producers will close it for a few hard weeks is slim. Still, if they keep all those pop stars in the role, then you can sure bet I won't be helping those ticket sales out any time soon.
When is it closing?
February 22nd
I think Taboo sort of rolled downhill from the start. And I'll admit, I liked one or two of the songs...
Gypsy is like the unsinkable ship. We thought it wouldn't sink. It's sinking. Don't you love it when I talk in metaphors?
