I've played ZACH and its a great role. He may not be visible for most of the show but he drives it. If you don't have a good Zach, its tough to get good performances out of your cast on the line.
You also forgot Zach's confrontation scene with Cassie, Margo, which is one of the most thrilling parts of the show.

Doesn't Zack dance at the beginning and the end?
As much as I adore Raul, I don't think he's capable of doing the opening combination.
[EDIT] And much in the same vein, casting a known name will be extraordinarily difficult, as I believe that there even LESS great known male dancers than there are great known female ones.
So, yeah, Unknowns.

Yes, Zach gets to do the two best combinations in the show and then gets to sit down and yell at a bunch of dancers for two hours. Its the best role in the show

Posted: 6/23/05 at 7:00pmI disagree. I've played Paul a few times and I think that is the best part. He gets to do some phenomenal dancing, a killer monologue and he gets to leave stage early so he has plenty of time to change costumes! hahahaha

Posted: 6/23/05 at 7:20pmI only hope that whoever they get to play Cassie can dance the HELL out of "Music And The Mirror". I saw a production of ACL, and while there were some fantastic dancers and it was generally quite good, Cassie was just not good enough, and it brought the whole production down in my eyes.

Posted: 6/24/05 at 10:05amI'm old enough to have seen it in 1976 and was absolutely blown away. But I fear that some of the topics that made the show so powerful back then (coming out to one's family, plastic surgery, the rejection of dancers because of their age) are topics we're become used to (if not bored with) thanks to Oprah, Jerry Springer, and Dr Phil. Would 'A Chorus Line' still have the same impact on audiences today? Or would we just sit there, bored with the dialog, until the next song came along?

I think it still does have the same impact today because sadly times have not changed.
And yes, I'll restate it, UNKNOWNS. Even if they do cast "demi-stars" for Cassie or Zach, it should be marketted for the SHOW and not 2 members of an ensemble cast.

Posted: 6/24/05 at 10:36amYet once again I agree with you Avigdor. I too wonder if it is still too fresh in most of our heads to bring back to Broadway. From the moment I heard that they were officially reviving it I thought that it was just too soon.

I think I saw A Chorus Line 10 times over the years including the original cast and the dress rehearsal of the record breaking performance. The original cast was 'special' in every way because they were our peers. We 'knew' them (or of them), some of them personally. The show worked on that level then.
However I saw the show with casts that were complete strangers to me and it became more powerful because there was not the extra baggage of knowledge.
The less we know about the actors, the better we know the characters.
