I think Gray is my favorite Carlotta of all time.
When Follies opened in New York this past September, Paige was one of the weak links in the cast. She seemed confused on stage and her "I'm Still Here" would vacillate between sounding like an old curmudgeon and exasperated pleas of desperation, the exact wrong way to sing the song, in my opinion.
By January, the only other time I saw it,everyone (me included) was raving over Paige. She sang it like she was proud of her past and definitely conveyed Carlotta's humor/sarcasm and delivered her lines with an edge. I think that performance was one of the best I've ever seen live of the song. She also nailed Carlotta's character in the book scenes and in the ensemble numbers. I'm not sure how it happened so quickly but I know a lot of others felt the same way. I wonder if the Tony voters all went at the beginning of the run or if some waited until the end. That may very well determine her fate in June.
My favorite is Nancy Walker's version as well. Is there any video from that concert?
No. Video of that concert is one of the Holy Grails of Musical Theater, like Judy at Carnegie Hall and Ethel in Gypsy.
The version that Yvonne de Carlo sings at the Hollywood Bowl (several years after FOLLIES) is a better interpretation than that from The David Frost Show (where she forgets the lyrics).
