One song in Company that I have always loved because of the lyrics is "Sorry, Grateful". The entire song captures the feeling of ambivilence in a relationship but, there is one line in particular that strikes me and I have always loved
"You fear she's starting to slip away and scared she'll stay".

Posted: 12/10/03 at 1:31pm"On My Own" has always been my favorite song--the lyrics are just gorgeous. And lately "Unusual Way" has really touched me. But the lyrics that have probably made the biggest impression on my are from RENT. "Look I find some of what you teach suspect because I'm used to relying on intellect, but I try to open up to what I don't know. Because reason says I should've died three years ago." Don't know why, but it stuck with me.
"Shut up! It's been 29 years!!!" --the incomparable Patti LuPone in her MUCH DESERVED Tony acceptance speech for Gypsy.

I've also always loved Unexpected Song and thought the lyrics to it were beautiful, even though a bit sappy and corny. I especially love the line "this is not like me at all, for once I'm lost for words, your smile has really thrown me". I really identify with taht line.
I want to have this song be the one I first dance to at my wedding.

Another Sondheim gem:
"There's a hole in the world like a great black pit, and it's filled with people who are filled with ****."

LOVE WITHOUT REASON
LOVE WITHOUT MERCY
LOVE WITHOUT PRIDE OR SHAME
LOVE UNCONCERNED WITH BEING RETURNED
NO WISDOM, NO JUDGMENT,
NO CAUTION, NO BLAME
............
NOT PRETTY OR SAFE OR EASY,
BUT MORE THAN I EVER KNEW
LOVE WITHIN REASON -
THAT ISN'T LOVE
(Stephen Sondheim, "Passion")
Other than that almost anything by Sondheim or William Finn - both of whom write lyrics at a level mere mortals can only dream of.

Sondheim Sondheim and more Sondheim...
"She likes to moo in the moonlight,
When the moody moon appears
And when she moos in the moonlight,
Gosh, it's moosic to my ears.
She's so moosical."

How about:
"And then in bed, George.
I mean he kneeds me.
I mean like dough, George.
Hello, George...?"

another sondheim: "Pardon me is everybody here, because if everybody's here I want to thank you all for coming to the wedding, I'd appreciate you going even more...."
From Company
That song is so funny to me and it can occupy my brain completely. At my Uncle's funeral many years ago, the only way I could keep myself from completely losing it was to utter those lyrics over and over again.

Posted: 12/10/03 at 7:33pmI have to say I loved some of the lyrics in Wicked. Ones especially from I'm Not That Girl, Defying Gravity, and For Good. Lyric wise I also love Not For the Life of Me (Millie), Unexpected Song (Song and Dance), One Day More (Les Miz) among others!

City of Angels:
No, I'ver never seen her.
I've seen girls like this
So young and ripe
You're missing Miss is not the type
To miss a misdemeanor.
Into the Woods:
Although how can you know who you are
'Till you know what you want
(Which you don't)
So then which do you pick?
Where you're safe out of sight
In yourself, but where everything's wrong.
Or where everything's right
But you know that you'll never belong.
And whichever you pick
Do it quick
'Cause you're starting to stick to the steps of the palace

"...When did your sparkle turn to fire
And your warmth become desire?
Oh, what miracle has made you the way you are?"
---GIGI from Gigi (Lerner/Loewe)
"...She'll grow older
By the hour
And be hopelessly shattered
By Saturday night."
---A WEEKEND IN THE COUNTRY from A Little Night Music
(Sondheim)
"...It happens very softly
With no apparent cause
The little imperfections
No longer give you pause.
The traits you thought peculiar
You managed to acquire
And what you didn't understand
You gradually desire..."

"Tea for two
And two for tea
And me for you
And you for me
Can't you see
How happy
We will be?"
and so on for the entire song--perfectly direct and simple.
"This is how Sampson was shorn,
Each in her style a Delilah reborn..."
Perfect inner rhyme
The Man That Got Away: It wasn't until I saw the lyric written out that I realized this song had verses and a real rhyme scheme. Its terrifically subtle in the writing.
And to reiterate:
"Wear you hair down
And a flower.
Don't use make-up.
Dress in white.
She'll grow older
By the hour,
And be hopelessly shattered
By Saturday night."

A Little Night Music
"If I were you, and I'd done what I'd done, I'd do what I did when I gave you the ring, having said what I said."
tick, tick...BOOM!
"I know Seymour's the greatest. But I'm dating a semi-sadist."
Little Shop of Horrors
"Work together, sweat together, shower together, that's how it should be!"
Zanna, Don't!
"I...(she)...I am a girl...(she is a lass)..."

"Let your mind start a journey through a strange new world! Leave all thoughts of the world you knew before! Let your soul Take you where you long to be! Only then can you belong to me . . .
Floating, falling, sweet intoxication! Touch me, trust me savour each sensation! Let the dream begin, let your darker side give in
to the power of the music that I write -the power of the music of the night . . ."
Basically I love "Music of the Night"!!
I also love this POTO song, it's always stuck in my head!
"Wishing you were somehow here again . . .knowing we must say goodbye . . .Try to forgive . . .teach me to live . . .give me the strength to try . . ."

The lyrics to "Defying Gravity" are absolutely magnificently written, and almost everyone can relate. The ones written above and wonderful as well as:
"Something has changed within me; Something is not the same. I'm sick of playing by the rules of someone else's game."

If driving fast cars you like,
If low bars you like,
If old hymns you like,
If bare limbs you like,
If Mae West you like,
Or me undressed you like,
Why, nobody will oppose.
When ev'ry night the set that's smart is in-
Truding in nudist parties in
Studios.
Anything goes.
