re: Your Personal favorite For Best Musical Tony

I never left the first one, according to my shrink.
Cheyenne Jackson tickled me. AFTER ordering SoMMS a drink but NOT tickling him, and hanging out with Girly in his dressing room (where he DIDN'T tickle her) but BEFORE we got married. To others. And then he tweeted Boobs. He also tweeted he's good friends with some chick on "The Voice" who just happens to be good friends with Tink's ex. And I'm still married. Oh, and this just in: "Pettiness, spite, malice ....Such ugly emotions... So sad." - After Eight, talking about MEEEEEEEE!!! I'm so honored! :-)

Curtains. I haven't seen the all of the show, but what I've seen and heard I really like.

Spring Awakening was just okay to me. I don't think it's one of the most amazing things ever, like other people, but I did enjoy it very much.

"Right now, it looks like GG will only pick up a Tony for Ebersol"

Ms. Ebersole (with an e) will probably win. (knock on wood.)
However, the book and score should win, as should Mary Louise Wilson for featured actress.

In my opinion, GG should win best musical, but either Curtains or SA will, depending on the demographics of the voters.

re: Your Personal favorite For Best Musical Tony

I know that I'm biased because I'm a huge fan of the show but I really don't see Spring Awakening not winning this year. It has had the best reivews so far. I am fairly positive that Curtains will get nice reviews as well but the hype for Spring feels a bit stronger and the fact that it has illicited such strong emotions from critics and fans a like will be what gives it the edge. I wonder how LoveMusik will do to. That is the show that I think has any chance at being a threat to SA's tony.

For me there is no way that Spring shouldn't win. Grey Gardens was a good show but by no means a great show and it really is the Christine Ebersole and Mary Louise Wilson show. I found parts very moving in Grey Gardens but as a whole I felt the show had a lot of flaws. I think Spring Awakening is a far superior show and I know that they are both very different and so to compare is pointless.

Excellent reviews do not necessarily translate into Tony Awards. Tony history is littered with shows that got incredible notices losing to shows that got shredded by the critics. URINETOWN, anyone?

I'm hoping and expecting Pirate Queen to be in the nominations of best musical.

The buzz after the opening will be interesting.

The book of Spring Awakening is what keeps it from being my favorite. The cast is majorly talented, the score is incredible, and the staging is ingenious. BUT, as a show as a whole, I found it as a bit of a letdown. I loved it, but I loved Grey Gardens more. So, for right now, I want Grey Gardens to win.

re: Your Personal favorite For Best Musical Tony

Out of everything I've seen this season, which so far is been pretty much everything minus Grey Gardens (which I hear is fantastic) and Curtains (which I have tickets for in May), my vote goes to Spring Awakening.

I doubt it will win, and Curtains will take home to Tony.

Spring Awakening. Best Musical and Music and Lyrics. The thing with this show is that the staging tells the story as much as the book, music, and lyrics. It's the complete package. And in the wrong hands it could have been a disaster. If Michael Mayer doesn't win for directing, there is no justice in this world. Also, eavesdrop on people leaving the theatre. They aren't just talking about the quality of the show, they are talking about the teens they know, and how they deal with things, and the the struggles parents have balancing freedom with boundaries. Love it or hate, it does what great theatre should...tells a story that makes people think, without crossing the line into pretentiousness. John Doyle should take notes.
Grey Gardens has a fantastic story and characters, but the show has a couple of elements that just don't work. Mary Poppins will win for choreography, and Curtains will get the orcheststration/design consolation prizes--maybe even book.

re: Your Personal favorite For Best Musical Tony

So far, I've seen Grey Gardens, Spring Awakening, and Curtains. My personanl favorites for the Tony would be either Grey Gardens or Curtains. I absolutely loved them, and would go see them multiple times if I were in New York. I thought Spring Awakening was ok, but not amazing. It had great music and performances by Groff and Gallagher, but I felt emotionally uninvolved and indifferent about the rest of the show.

jbdc, I think MARY POPPINS has the scenic design element in the bag.

I would say the same for SPRING AWAKENING and lighting.

So what design element will CURTAINS win? Costumes?

re: Your Personal favorite For Best Musical Tony

You're right on Poppins and Spring Awakening for set/lights respectively--I was speaking generally, like how Drowsy won last year for sets and costumes--which were witty and fine, but nothing genius. Curtains is this years Drowsy to me. Show people will love it, and respect it, but it won't win best musical. I should have thought through what I was writing, though. Curtains could take Costumes, although, I'd secretly like Grey Gardens to take it.

re: Your Personal favorite For Best Musical Tony

As I don't live in NYC and don't see Broadway shows often, I haven't seen any of the shows (yet!). However, I'm judging purely off clips I've seen, cast albums, etc.

Who I want to Win: Grey Gardens

Who I think will win: Curtains
I am a firm believer in serendipity- all the random pieces coming together in one wonderful moment, when suddenly you see what their purpose was all along.

Grey Gardens might get costumes. Ebersole's Act II stuff was quite novel. It seemed like she changed many times, but I think she actually had only two costumes. The Act I designs were beautiful too.

re: Your Personal favorite For Best Musical Tony

"Grey Gardens has a fantastic story and characters, but the show has a couple of elements that just don't work."

Spring Awakening has quite a few elements that are flawed as well. Grey Gardens may not be perfect, but it isn't any more flawed than Spring Awakening is. Spring Awakening, I felt, told a story with no plot (which is fine, as long as you know what you're doing with it) and tried to jam too many themes into itself. There were times when I was shocked, bewildered, touched, and exhilerated by what I was seeing, but I find most of it IS because of Michael Mayer's brilliant staging.

An example is "Totally F*cked". It's a moment I will never forget, but it has nothing to do with it's contribution to the story nor towards how I feel as a person. Yes, I feel that there's a certain code of conduct I have to follow in this world or else I will be crushed by the wheel of human existance that seems to never stop without a care. BUT, the reason I felt so overwhelmed by the number was because of the freedom that the cast was having in that song. It seemed that finally in a show where everyone has to be restrained and tension fills the air, there was a moment (albeit a brief one) where everyone just jumped around on the stage without a care and the lights went crazy and the music was loud and I more than anything wanted to be up on that stage jumping around, too. That had to do with the production, not the material.

In Grey Gardens, I cried during "Around the World" because during that number and during the rest of the show I thought to myself, "Oh my God. What if I become like that? What if I don't become a successful actor and I end up having to lead a quiet life with a thankless job and an invisible existance? What if I die resentful towards the world of what I never had? What if I don't get to travel around the world, and must to be forced to do so with my imagination?" That response wasn't from the production itself. It was the material. And any show that can do that, I think, has every right to win Best Musical.
