Posted: 10/15/05 at 6:20pmLe Compt de Valmont in Les Liaisons Dangereuse certainly qualifies, IMO, along with his counterpart, Madame de Meurtille. They are protagonists whose behavior is anything but admirable -but completely fascinating.

Cladwell, Lockstock, Javert, Applegate, Thenardier are VILLIANS!
They may be interesting, or fun to play, or even very sympatheticm, but they are all against the protagonist, or the lead of the play. If the play were about these people, then they would be anti-heroes, but when the show has a hero, a "good" character, and there is someone working against that person, then they are VILLAINS!
But they certainly can be the most interesting characters in the play/show.
