If you could travel to New York City (assuming you aren't from there) how would you plan your trip?
These are the guidelines
The trip must go from a Thursday to a Monday
You have to fit in as many shows as you can (Broadway, off Broadway, Cabarets, etc...)
What shows would you see?
What hotel would you stay at?
This all has to stay theatre related because it might help some other people plan a "Theatre-ish" trip to NYC. Have fun.
Here is mine
HOTEL: The Algonquin- It is in the theatre district and has a very nice after theatre bar. It is near a lot of pre and post theatre restruants with reasonable prices. It is near Times Square and very close to Fifth Avenue.
SHOWS: Thursday night I would start off the trip with tickets to Sweeney Todd. Friday night I would get tickets to Doubt because everyone needs to see a play...a trip to New York cannot just have musicals. Saturday night I would see The Light in the Piazza. Sunday Matinee I would see Beauty and the Beast (if you have kids) or if it is just a couple, I would see The Pajama Game . Sunday night I would see Rent. You can alternate these shows any way you want, because it doesnt matter what shows you see on what nights...its all based on avalibility.
FOOD: I would reccomend DB Bistro Moderne, La Trattoria Dopo Teatro, Sardi's (just for fun), and John's Pizza.
Yeah this is so lame. I hope you can have fun.

Posted: 4/5/06 at 7:04pmNYC is my favorite place on earth, but I've only been there once so I don't know enough to say my ideal trip and where I would stay. However, I would never advise anyone to stay at the YMCA. Haha I went for a week with some friends from school and that was THE cheapiest place so the person that booked it figued, why not? So we stayed in rooms smaller than my closet for a week at the west side Y. Public restrooms, the bed-bed scare, and some creepy neighbors... so don't stay there.

(I'm from NYC, but I'm speaking hypothetically)
HOTEL: I know nothing about hotels, but I'd have to say the Helmsley, just because I pass by it all the time and it looks nice.
SHOWS:
Thursday night: I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change.
Friday night: Sweeney Todd
Saturday matinee: Rabbit Hole
Saturday evening: DRS
Sunday afternoon: Hairspray
Sunday Evening: Chicago
FOOD: Ellen's Stardust Diner, Olive Garden, John's Pizza
, Ollie's

Can I respond? I live about 35 minutes from the city, and I go there very often. But hopefully I fit the requirements, this is a cool thread :)
Hotel: This I can't really answer, because I take day trips. I'll think about this.
Shows: Thursday night: Hmmm. Pajama Game, I guess.
Friday night: Can I do a lottery? If so, then I'll try my hand at the Wicked lotto (I tend to be lucky there). If I win, go me, if I lose, I'll go to a late dinner or something.
Saturday matinee: Color Purple or The Odd Couple, maybe.
Saturday night: Hairspray
Sunday afternoon: Sweeney Todd
Sunday night: Rent
Food: I don't know...Sardi's possibly. It's become a tradition though, when I go to the city with my mom, we always eat at Olive Garden :)

Here is my real NYC trip:
Thursday May 25 - Tarzan
Friday May 26 - Sweeney Todd
Saturday May 27 - Color Purple (2:00) and Wedding Singer (8:00)
Sunday May 28 - Lestat (3:00) and Pajama Game (7:00)
Staying at either Hotel QT or The Muse Hotel
Not sure about the dining part yet -
Maybe a brunch cruise on World Yacht or maybe brunch buffet at The View or The Rainbow Room.

(I live in NYC, so I am also playing hypothetical):
HOTEL: I don't really know hotels these days, but back when I lived in L.A. and visited NYC I would have to do the 'budget price, but safe' hotel thing, and I had my best experiences at:
- midtown area: Broadway Inn, 46th btwn Broadway and 8th, close enough to Times Square, minus the noise
- not midtown: Hotel Deauville at 29th/Park
Or, if money was no object I'd stay at the Ritz-Carlton Central Park. :)
SHOWS:
I'd be on a budget, so I'd pick up Piazza (and hopefully Sweeney) on TKTS, I'd try the lottos for Q, Bee, DRS and Rent and see whatever I win of those, and I'd do the general rush for The Color Purple.
If money was no object and I was buying all of my tix ahead of time-
Thurs night: Sweeney Todd
Fri night: Ave Q
Sat matinee: Drumstruck
Sat night: The Color Purple
Sun matinee: DRS or Light in the Piazza
Sun night: Spelling Bee or Rent
FOOD: I'm prety easy about food, but a visit to NY always included a trip to John's Pizzeria. :)
edit to add: Had the worst dining experience of my life at Ellen's Stardust Diner, and would not recommend that place to anyone. But others here seem to like it there, so maybe mine was the anomaly.

SHOWS:
Thursday night (8:00)-Festen
Friday night (8:00)-Three Days of Rain
Saturday matinee (2:00)-The Drowsy Chaperone

Sunday matinee (3:00)-Landscape of the Body

And while of course the show(Spelling Bee) was the highlight of her trip, I think this was in a very close second, we enjoyed it a lot!
