I had the privilege... and I mean PRIVILEGE.. to see her eleven times in MASTERCLASS.
One of the greatest things I've ever seen in my life.

Listen to that Charlie Rose interview...
It should be required viewing for aspiring theatre actors.

And she is from Melbourne, Australia thank you! About five or six years ago she came back here to appear in the Melbourne Theatre Company (of which she is a founding member) production of The Visit and was wonderful. Of course when it came to giving out annual theatre awards ( State and National) she was overlooked. Huh? What were they thinking? Sour grapes perhaps?
Still kicking myself that i missed that production of The Visit.

IMO, Zoe Caldwell is the greatest living English-speaking actress in the world and one of the greatest of all time, period. Her Medea and Master Class remain two of the most memorable nights I've ever spent in the theatre. The thought of her in The Visit is overwhelming -- could you imagine what she did at the end of the First Act? I wonder if she still feels up to doing it. Lynn Fontanne was in her 70's when she did it (magnificently -- another one of the big ones).
She was marvelous in The Visit. It was considered the 50th Anniversary production for the Melbourne Theatre Company. As such, they invited Caldwell and Alex Scott, another original member, to appear. Their stage presence was memorable in a fascinating production.
And yet she was not honoured in any way by her own countrymen. It was a disgrace. It was at that point I lost all respect for the Melbourne Green Room Awards. As I said, sour grapes perhaps?

Zoe caldwell - Masterclass -a True Masterpeice! Probably one of the most thrilling nights I've spent in the theatre in 30 years plus.

Zoe and Audra! How about that for a master Master Class
When you really stop to think about casting Caldwell as Callas it doesn't make much sense.
Caldwell and Callas look NOTHING alike.
Caldwell has NO musical training or experience.
But what Caldwell did was BEYOND genius acting.. it was pure theatre magic. You felt all the disparate parts of yourself suddenly and magically wrangled together. Sitting in the theatre you became whole, electric and alive in the power and possibilities of art.
So singular an experience that couldn't be preserved on film or recording. You had to be there. It was live and ALIVE.
That's why I really consider it a privilege to have seen her.

Patti nor Fay look much like Callas either. Both gave stunning performances with Fay being way ahead of Patti.
Slightly off topic but but what happened to the movie version that Fay was going to make when she bought the rights???

Fay looks more like Montserrat Cabelle

Sorry, I can't content myself with only one Caldwell comment. I'd already been a Caldwell fan of long-time standing when Master Class was trying out in Philadelphia. Because I was -- and still am -- an avid Callas fan, I couldn't resist seeing the combination in one fell swoop. Caldwell far surpassed my already-high expectations. Although it was raining at the time, I walked all the way from the theatre to the station, totally dazed by what I had seen. That performance was everything that great acting is all about and I'll never forget it. I was still in shock three days later. So, PLEASE some enterprising producer, do The Visit with her. Dewhurst, Stanley, Fontanne, Worth and Caldwell -- THOSE are my idea of an actress!!!!
How divine that would be. Zoe and Chita are the same age!
I saw LuPone and Dunaway too.
But anything after Caldwell is moot.
Did anyone see Caldwell in PRIME OF MISS JEAN BRODIE?
Did Lupone do Broadway or was it just the season In London's West End, I dont recall her on Broadway?
My only visit to the delightful Wilbour theatre in Boston was for Dunaways performance.
Caldwell left all of then, as fabulous as each was, in the cold!
LuPone replaced (her first and only time) Caldwell on Broadway.
Not such a bad move eh! Anyone would want to jump into those shoes.
Dixie Carter must have then replaced LuPone as LuPone was in London From April' 97 for the West End run. The West End had fantastic reviews but still only ran 6 weeks!
London does not like LuPone!!!
