a wonderful guy from south pacific

so i started working on wonderful guy in voice lessons recently and i was suprised to find a difference in the lyrics from any of the recordings i'm familiar with

does anyone know when or why the change was made?

SAME
I expect everyone of my crowd to make fun
Of my proud protestations of faith in romance,
And they'll say I'm naïve as a babe to believe
Every fable I hear from a person in pants.

FIRST VERSION
Fearlessly I'll face them and argue their doubts away,
Loudly I'll sing about flowers in spring,
Flatly I'll stand on my little flat feet and say
Love is a grand and a beautiful thing!
I'm not ashamed to reveal
The world famous feelin' I feel.

SECOND VERSION (my sheet music)
I used to share your satirical attitude
thinking that love could be kept in its place
til all of a sudden that lyrical platitude
bounced up and hit me smack in the face
that's how i turned out to be
the happy young women you see

thanks in advance!

Wow - never heard that before! The first one, the one we're all familiar with, is MUCH better. The second one sounds SO awkward over the music!

First time I've seen those lyrics.
Interesting, but I like the ones I'm more familiar with.

Barbara Cook sang it on her current concert-I believe it was recorded. In the show that refrain is not repeated-so it was either cut or written expressly for the sheetmusic.

As good a guess as I can muster.

I'm not familiar with the second version at all. When I was in the show, Nellie sang the original (first) lyrics.

I believe that "A Wonderful Guy" wasn't the original song written for that slot in South Pacific anyway. Wasn't the original song called "Suddenly Lucky" which later morphed into "Getting to know you" from The King and I? Who knows how many re-writes that song went through. I, too, like the familar lyrics better...but its really interesting to read the second set. Thanks:)
There's always room for pathos - and jazz hands.

I agree it's fascinating to read, but this second lyric is SO out-of-character for Nellie (who's corny as Kansas in August, at that very moment). She sings about her sudden emotions and gut feelings here, and this second lyric is way too self-analytical and sophisticated.

Basically, it sucks. re: a wonderful guy from south pacific

re: a wonderful guy from south pacific

I like the second because none of us have heard it - that would be a great thing to sing in an audition - it would possibly make the auditors sit up and take notice...which is a good thing.
"I don't really get the ending, all i can go with is when after several months,Judith saw Pat sang, and later she kissed him on the toilet, after that the story back to where Pat went down from the stage after he'd sung, and he went to the italian lady.I just don't get it,what Judith exatcly meant when he kissed Pat that she had seen, and did Pat end up together with The Italian Lady? Please help me,thank u very much!" Quote from someone on IMDB in reference to a movie he/she didn't understand. Such grammar!

redhotinnyc2---So would singing the bridge of the song in French.

I don't think drawing attention to a song is necessarily a good thing in an audition. You want them to watch you, not suddenly wonder where you got your lyrics from.

This is why it was always considered a no-no to sing Sondheim at an audition (back when I was pounding the pavements in New York).

You run the risk of the song outshining the singer.

re: a wonderful guy from south pacific

I've done umpteen productions of South Pacific and have never heard that second set of lyrics. Let's all turn the other way and hope they walk of the sheet music.

I think it was written for the sheet music. In the 40s/50s, it was pretty common for additional lyrics to be written for "single" sheets.
