I was wondering if someone could tell me about the music in this production? Was there music in the original or was all of the music in this brand new or was it a mix of both? Thanks.

The play has songs in it, written by the playwright (Bertolt Brecht), that are often put to new music/orchestrations with new productions. That's what's happening here w/ Tesori's involvement.

BTW, the composer who worked with Brecht on the play's original production was Paul Dessau, not Kurt Weill (as is sometimes thought).

The recurring theme of the song is the Ballad of Mother Courage. It is reminiscent of Kurt Weill's Threepenny opera score. Other than that, the score is heavily influenced from war and folk music during the time period. All these different war and folk themes are held together by Jeanine Tesori's scoring of percussion and brass instruments. My favorite songs are the solo sang by Jenifer Lewis, Yvette, and the duet sang by "Mother" and "Daughter" as Kattrin wheels Mother courage around the stage. I really like the music from the show...as well as the acting. The music director really knows what she's doing as well, her and Meryl seem to be able to communicate really well constantly changing how to make each song best fit her voice.
