Just a month ago I finished a Dutch translation of Company turned into a play. It was amazingly fun to do although it felt weird to turn sondheims lyrics into monologues.
The first reading with the cast is in two weeks. I hope it will work as good as we (the director and me) thought it wil.
The music of Company is good, but I don't really feel that the music adds that much to it. Especially Barcelona and Getting married today turned out beautiful as dialogue/monologue.
Ironically, when you guys said "Mamma Mia" and "Spring Awakening" as plays, they originally plays. I'm not sure what the titles were, though. I just know that Spring Awakening was derived from some turn of the century play, and that both Mamma Mia and Carmelina (a flop musical from the seventies) were adapted from the same play.

After seeing Spelling Bee, I remember saying that I would've liked it a lot more without the music.

It's not a stage show, but if you took out most of the music, The Hunchback of Notre Dame would be one of Disney's greatest. There's good stuff there, but a lot of it just strikes me as Disney hadn't yet realized they could make non-musicals.
myshikobit, thanks for the info i had no idea that mamma mia was originally an unsuccessful play!!! the things we learn on bway world
None. Everything's better as a musical.

Spelling Bee would be much better without music. I think it was based off of a play to begin with. The score in Spelling Bee I thought was terrible.
