I watched QVC for one hour hoping to see the performance from cast members of DRS. I should have known it would be a waste of time. There were two live performances with Gregory Jbara, and Rachel De Benedet (understudy for Muriel) and the ladies of DRS. They performed "What was a woman to do?" and "Like Zis" They also showed two 10 second clips from the show. The live performances were ok, but I don't feel that Rachel has the same sense of humor in her singing that Joanna does. Anyone else have similar feelings about this QVC thing?

i was happy that they acknowleged rachel's being there (i've seen things that the understudy was kinda ignored to talk to the star) but i insisted on flipping between this and medium... and got a lot of blank looks watching the numbers they showed (they were kinda waiting for something big)

I watched it and it was not great, but it was QVC I had really low expectations. Like I said to my wife earlier, I'm sure John has a "I don't play QVC" clause in his contract. For what it was there were two nice performances and the show got some much deserved exposure.
I'm so pissed! I was tricked into watching this thing thinking that Norbert would be there. I actually thought this was a serious promo for the show and the cast would be there to sell it. If I hadn't seen the show and know how great it is, I'd think it was boring and wouldn't travel from all over to see it. What a wicked waste of time!
"I'm the STAR!"--Daniel Reichard during Glory Daze sound check
hey I liked it ... taped it ... will no doubt ff through the selling of jewelry parts when I replay my tape, but I thought Rachel and Greg were terrific and enjoyed watching them very much. Nothing compares with actually seeing the show itself ... but this was good exposure and might get new people into the theatre to see the show who might not have been inclined to go otherwise. JMO
I taped it too. Gregory was the only highlight for me. It didn't represent the show well at all. I don't know, I thought the whole cast would be there to really sell it. That women says she saw it and only mentions Norbert in the last minute for "dirty rotten guys like us"-that's it! I'm really pissed off!

I'm sure she does, I'm sure Norbert doesn't its clear from meeting him and seeing him on NY1 he doesn't see himself as that big of a star. Again I'm happy with what I got, I spent the whole time doing other stuff and ran in to record the songs. Rak and Jbara did a really nice job. I'm not sure how I would feel otherwise, but since I have seen the show (multiple times) I loved just seeing it again. Besides these QVC watchers are probably more drawn to this more pc less funny stuff than the real "showstopers" I would have loved to see "Great Big Stuff" but never expected it. A mention or two of Norbert's and Sherries's names though, that I am pissed didn't happen!
I thought it was great! Norbert, John, Joanna, etc will get plenty of coverage around Tony time. How ofter do you get to see an understudy performance? Also loved that they did What Was A Woman to Do and Like Zis Like Zat. Of all the songs, I didn't expect those.
Aww you guys are right instead of pissing you guys off, QVC shouldn't have considered even showing anything from DRS. How selfish of them....seriously we should kill them b/c I am PISSED.
my mom's theory on the song selections was they fit in easiest to show what they were hawking- i would assume the woman doing "what was a woman to do" had a good deal of the jewelery on (i only caught the end of that part) and since rachel was already there, i'm sure it was most cost effective to just bring on gregory to do their number together (i can only imagine the appearance fee they'd have to pay john lithgow)

okay as for John Lithgow, didn't one of the jewelry designer guys mention that John had gone to California to see his newborn (and also very first) grandchild? So I think we can all cut ol' Grampie Lithgow some slack on this one. lol
Also, the QVC studios are in West Chester, PA. I'm not sure how much of a day trip that is from NYC, I haven't "map quested" it, but it could well be that most of the cast couldn't work going there into their schedules on their one day off. Remember, the show on QVC last night was LIVE, not taped, and at 10-11 Eastern. Also, I believe they tend to like to rest their voices as much as possible on their day off. With all these factors combined, I think we should be thankful that we got to see the members of the cast and ensemble who were there last night.
I turned it off in disgust after the 15 second clip of John Lithgow singing the very very end of one of his numbers was shown after being teased for 30 minutes. Rule of thumb: If more time is spent saying "Coming up soon, John Lithgow!" than is spent showing the clip itself, you've been had.
Having not seen the show, I have to say that if this were my only exposure to it, I sure wouldn't want to buy a ticket to it. But then again, people were buying hundreds of really really butt ugly fake earrings, so I'm guessing QVC audiences just buy anything. I hope DRS made a LOT of money from this tie-in.
And please, can we put Joan Rivers to sleep? God she is annoying!
Thought maybe some might like a list of who from the cast and ensemble were on the QVC "Soundrels Jewelry Collection" show last night, especially those who didn't have a chance to tune in ...
Gregory Jbara, Rachel eBenedet, Julie Connors, Rachele Rak, Gina Lamparella, Laura Marie Duncan, Sally Mae Dunn. Everyone did a great job!
Oh yeah ... and via taped clips from the musical, we saw John Lithgow and Norbert Leo Butz ... John, with ensemble, in a very brief, maybe less than 30 sec.? clip, doing "Give Them What They Want" and the end of "Dirty Rotten Number" with Lithgow and Butz. Updated On: 4/26/05 at 11:26 AM
I thought the songs were well chosen for a show that is about selling jewelry. I thought it was a smart way to sell the show as well. While I was happy to see these two terrific songs showcased, not having Gleason perform didn't do them any favors. The understudy seemed like a lovely woman but on TV last night she gave the kind of performance that makes you wince when you see a slip for the understudy as opposed to seeing someone like Linda Mugleston who always delivers the character she is playing rather than her interpretation of what Donna Murphy or Vanessa Williams created. I think Lithgow live would have stolen attention from the jewelry and a live performance with Butz would have been even more distracting from selling jewelry. You needed the women there in costume for this event.
Now me, I'll "waste" me time anytime to set me sights on as handsome a pirate as Gregory Jbara! He's a treasure, that one is. Updated On: 4/27/05 at 01:07 AM
