There was never an official soundtrack released of the movie ON THE TOWN but some selections have turned up in some of the Rhino CD compilations.
A British studio cast recording of the film score was released on LP but has not been released on CD.
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!

Posted: 2/5/09 at 12:59amFrontrowcentre2: Was Maggie Flynn ever released on a CD format? Also, I have never been able to find the original London Cast recording of Company with Larry Kert on a CD format in the United States. Was a CD ever made with Larry Kert in the London Cast of Company? If so, where do you suggest I look? Thank you.

MAGGIE FLYNN is coming on CD from DRG later this month. Latest info I have says it will be out on Feb 10, but that may change. (DRG 19123)
Some months after the OBCR of COMPANY was release, Larry Kert came into the Columbia Studios and they tracked his voice over Dean Jones' voice. The Lp was never issued in the U.S. but was released - briefly - in London when the how played there. In 1994 Sony set up a new label called Sony West End (to compliment their Sony Broadway line) and they released this version of COMPANY in the U.K. (and also in Canada) as SMK 53496. It was not released in the U.S. but some stores like Footlight brought it in as an import. This CD was in print a few years but eventually dropped from the catalogue, as were the others in the series.
To find the U.K. release watch E-Bay and Amazon marketplace but it will be an expensive item. Frankly I think it is overpriced as technically it is not great. You can tell Larry Kert is not in the same studio as everyone else, and you can faintly hear Dean Jones' voice in the background. Larry Kert's version of "Being Alive" was added as a bonus track to Sony's 1998 reissue of the OBCR.

Posted: 2/5/09 at 3:32pmThank you FrontRowCentre2 for the information about Maggie Flynn's release and also about Larry Kert's version on CD London Cast. I will not try to get this Company CD based on your valuable comments about it sounding like more a track overlay. Thank you for this tip. Three more shows fascinated me because a few of the songs that I thought were very good but had weak overall. So here comes my questions: Were there ever any recorded "studio cast" recordings for the following shows? Look To The Lilies, Georgy, Lovely Ladies, Fine Gentlemen? I know their runs were very short and they all had their problems, but some of the songs were so beautifully orchestrated and sung that I always thought they deserved at least a record of their performance for historical purposes. I also wondered if the songs that were dropped from Fiddler On The Roof during it's pre-Broadway opening have ever been recorded with full orchestrations, just for posterity? I have heard about some songs being in the try-out period shows at various times and then removed before the Broadway opening so they must have been fully orchestrated. I know these are odd questions but somehow I think you might be just the person who would have the answers. Thank you.

If you look up any title on the Cast Album database (use the link in my previous message) you will find info on any commercial records and quite a few non-commercials as well.
There were songs from LOOK TO THE LILLIES on one side of an LP (PLEASURES AND PALACES was on the reverse) and it appears that has come out on CD. Beware these Blue Pear discs as hey are often dubbed from sound system tapes and quality is quite poor.

There is a CD of LOVELY LADIES listed but it this bootleg from a "live audeince tape" (which means given the technology of the time it will probably be unlistenable.) I had heard that Bruce Yeko was planning a studio cast album of the score but haven't heard much about it.

Nothing on Georgy Girl, although audeince or sound system tapes are probably out there. (I do not collect these since the sound quality is so poor, and legally I cannot use them on my radio show.)
Some of the cut songs from FIDDLER can be heard as bonus tracks on the recent reissue of the OBCR. Also on this recording you can hear "When Messiah Comes"

It is also on one of the LOST IN BOSTON albums. Ther were 4 volums released all featuring songs that were cut from shows. All 4 contain a wealth of great material and are worth invstigating.

Posted: 2/5/09 at 4:25pmFrontRowCentre2: Many Thanks. You sure do know your material. The links all led me many valuable resources. When the musical version of CYRANO with Chris Plummer was in its' tryout phase in Boston, it was sold out for every performance. I ushered at the Colonial Theatre while in graduate school and there were many beautiful songs with incredible orchestrations that were removed before the Broadway opening. I often wonder why there isn't a musical theatre archives where every piece of orchestration is carefully preserved for every show. Case in point, when Bye Bye Birdie was revived with the full original orchestrations for the City Center Encores in 2004, Jonathan Tunick had to work real hard at the Tams-Witmark archives to piece together the original Ginzler orchestrations. He succeeded and it it was worth it. These orchestrations aren't even used in the licensing of the show now. They have "watered them down". It's a shame. There are so many songs that have been dropped from shows that were fully orchestrated, and I'm afraid those orchestrations are either lost or sitting in some file cabinet somewhere. Sad.
