so me and two friends are considering doing this play. we all love the ideas and concepts brought up, but we don't know about the three characters specifically. we want to know if there's one for each of us. if anyone could hook me up with character descriptions and/or a synopsis i would appreciate it so much! the three were origianlly played by alfred molina, victor garber and alan alda.

Have you read it? Because that should answer your question.

i am at the moment, but just wanted to get others opinions on the characters too so that we're not just blind-siding ourselves! thanks.

You seemed to ask the same questions about SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE, and it turned out that you really knew nothing about it. How do you love the concepts of the play without knowing the answers to your questions?

well i'm reading the play and have read lots about it, know the ideas and thoughts of the play, i just want to gather a full idea of the characters so that we don't just jump into it because we love the idea, rather than it actually could work well. does that make sense? sunday i don't know as well, and thus asked for help since i am performing a song from it in my upcoming recital. i really don't mean to sound stupid, maybe i'm not being articulate in the way i mean to be?

Well for starters, the play is meant for three actors who are at least in their mid-forties. It won't make much sense with younger performers.

It's a very short play - how long is it taking you to read it???

I did this show my freshman year...I was Ivan I don't remember much about it except Serge spent a rediculous amount of money on a painting and Marc thinks he's insane. Ivan is just trying to keep them all friends...i don't remember much else http://www.princetoninfo.com/199804/80408p03.html

You've just about summed it up, Hard Part. I thought this was one of the most over-rated plays I've seen in years. It's nothing more than 90 minutes of blabber about a white canvas. (I saw it when George Segal & Company were in it.)

I'll give you one piece of advice about what the playwright wants---don't do it as a comedy. Do it as a drama. Yasmina Reza does not fancy the play being thought of as a comedy. However, it can't be helped that the audience will laugh as times--especially when the painting is revealed. But the conflict in the play is serious to the characters--not comical.

This is a brilliant play. I've seen it with a few different casts - different character types - and it worked every time. But as someone said, it makes no sense being played by very young actors. Everyone in it needs some seasoning.

hard part, how old were you when you did the play. i didn't mean to make this a war folks, i just wanted to gather multiple opinion so that we were doing the show because it will really work rather than our excitement for it.
