So apparently they're doing a big production of bare in San Francisco in 2009. It's rumored to be a Broadway try-out. I just finshed perfforming in the Houston premiere of bare and our director emailed us this. I'm not quite sure where he found it, but I know when we were in priduction he kept in contact with Damon (the composer of the show) and a few prducers of the LA and NY productions, so he may have heard it from them. Here's the website. There's not much info yet, but apparently they're calling it "bare: a rock musical" now. So much for a pop opera. Can't wait to hear more! Does anyone else know anything?

this will still happen, despite the fact that the composer was charged for a huge felony offense in May?

I doubt it.

i don't see how putting on the show is going to be affected by damon's legal issues.
i doubt it'll be a broadway try-out though. unless they completely change the show. but hey, they're changing the title, so who knows.

there's also a thread in the san francisco board talking about this.

"unless they completely change the show"

well then, it IS effected.

how does a convict make music rewrites in a state prison?

as for the putting on of bare in general, no, damon being in prison won't affect that. they're putting on shows all over right now. changing stuff, i don't know if that will happen. and i don't know how that works. it could be perfectly possible even while he's incarcerated. and that's to say how much direction damon would be controlling. if they're making changes, i would think damon wouldn't be in control of that anyway since he's been so adamant with keeping it the same.

what i do know is there was a release a couple weeks ago. and it looks like it's happening.

Our director was told that Damon was out of prison... wether or not he's back in, I have no idea. They are, i know for a fact, making some changes. Damon saw our clips of rehearsal on youtube and really liked us. He wanted to send us some changes to the score and book to try out... but then he went to prison, so we ended up doing it as is.

They had a backers audition last week and someone attended and posted a little recap in the thread on the SF Board.

They probably should have just shortened it to 'BARE'. Both the 'rock musical' and 'pop opera' seem just unnecessarily cluttering up the title.

I LOVE the show, but it does need to be smartened up a bit if it wants a proper go at Broadway.

Best way to go: get James Snyder and Matt Doyle in to take the helm as Jason and Peter.

logan_of_oz - Who did you play in the Houston premiere of bare? I went and saw the Texas premiere in Dallas back in February/March.

I saw a Chicago production in January and loved the show. It would be great if it went to Broadway finally.

toanythingtaboo 2, I disagree about James Snyder. I saw him in Cry-Baby and I just don't think he looks the part enough. I would like to see Matt Doyle as Peter though (even though Doyle is a jerk off-stage...saw him in Spring Awakening).

Why should they both play their roles from the recording? They're both horribly bland in the recording. There is barely (no pun intended) emotion in their performances, and I def. don't buy James as a high school student.

It's nice to hear that changes are being made.

After the Dallas production (which I hated), the flaws of the script/score were *really* apparent. *SPOILER* My biggest complaint being how vauge it is that Jason commits suicide.

TDH-
It is possible to do work in jail, you just have to do it via mail/delivery versus being in person. In fact, I think they have progressed enough he could probably watch a video tape of a rehearsal/performance to decide.

And, it's not effecting, it's affecting.

Matt was no jerk off stage... i met him in january when he was on as ernst (jan 1) and he was so sweet, i talked to him about bare and everything and how i met damon in chicago when i saw the show there and everything doyle was a really really nice! And i would love to see this show finally make it to broadway, i was so excited when it was going to reopen in 2004 off broadway i had tickets and everything but sadly as we all know it never happened. This show deserves some kind of big future whether it's on stage or screen.

I know enough people involved to know that this is happening. I don't think it is a Broadway try-out though.

As for the Damon/prison rumours, he is not currently in jail, he was arrested, and was released. I do not know if there is enough evidence to go to trial or not, but that would not affect the production. He wrote it yes, but now it's up to the creative team to get the show up and running.

And if you don't want to wait for 2009, Sacramento has the jump on them. I'm playing the Priest, opening tomorrow night. re: bare: a rock musical

If Matt Doyle couldn't do it, then I really would like to see Adam Chanler Berat play Peter with Jonathan B. Wright as Jason. I think Krysta Rodriguez could be a great Ivy with Emma Hunton as Nadia.

As of now it's not a pre-Broadway tryout. It's a San Francisco Resident production.

I saw the New York Off-Broadway production of, Bare, a few years back. I thought it dreadful and offensive. As a gay, non-Christian, I found the very premise of Bare obnoxious and wrong. As a lover of musical theater, I thought the production loud and unfocused. Actually, there is very little about Bare I liked.
