Sorry if this belongs on the student board- I wasn't sure where to post it.
I'd like opinions on who people think are the best acting teachers in NYC? There seem to be a lot of acting schools but what you get out of them seems to depend a lot on the teacher.
There are a lot of good acting teachers in NYC. Here is one who I worked with a numbers of years ago. She was a director of mine and not my teacher but I also know of her teaching work. I'm not sure is she teaches privately anymore but here is a link to her home page:
Carol Fox Presscott
Check out the HB Studio down on Bank Street in The Village. Eveybody and his brother teaches there at some time or another and Uta Hagen was determined to keep the tuition low, so even now the classes come to about $180 for 12 weeks. The fall semester begins in September. Current and recent teachers include: Austin Pendelton, Anne Jackson, Laura Esterman, Mark Blum, Helen Gallagher, Jill Clayburg (briefly), Amy Wright. These are working professionals not just classroom pros with their head in the ground. I think the websight is: HBStudio.com, but you can Google it.
Good luck,
Gladys
(who is really a male character actor/playwright with 40 years in "the Biz")
PS - Also they encourage you to audit classes before you sign up so you can find someone who you feel will be good for you. What you want to avoid is someone who fills you with so much awe you are afraid to get up an work. One lady who comes to mind, who teaches basic Hagan/Burgoff technique at HB is Trudy Steibel. Very lovely, very gentle and very inspiring.
