How is this cd? Is it good? Is it worth getting? I don't know it but someone mentioned it in a class today and I was wondering about it. Thanks!

I like it, saw the show in London back in 2000. I can send you a couple songs if you want before you get the whole CD.

There are different versions, and each version has its unique qualities. I would go for either the Stephanie Lawrence version or the Kiki Dee version, although the Barbara Dickson version is good also. I would choose one of those three over the Petula Clark version.

I used to listen to Blood Brothers all the time about 10 years ago. It has a few things to appreciate about it, but I can't even bear to listen to it now. The pseudo-poetry that the narrator uses is about as banal as can be, and most of the songs are pretty weak. I do like "Long Sunday Afternoon," "I'm Not Saying a Word," and "Tell Me It's Not True." I think the Forbidden Broadway segment on this show is one of the funniest ever. If you choose to get it, definitely go with the older London cast (starring Kiki Dee) and not the "international cast." The Cassidy's are ok, and Petula Clark is quite good, but the narrator (the show's writer) is awful.

I own the Kiki Dee version and love it......it is a lot like The Beautiful Game.....

It's a pretty good show but most of the recordings are mediocre. AVOID the Cassidy recording at all costs :0) The score is not as important to the show as the book is...so I mean, just proceed with caution.

The version with the Cassidys is awful. Eddie is written as a tenor, and Shaun Cassidy is a low baritone. They had to lower the keys on all his stuff.

The 1988 Kiki Dee is the best cast recording of Blood Brothers to get. For about a year, I would be in tears every time I listened to Tell Me It's Not True on it.

Nothing precious, plain to see, don't make a fuss over me. Not loud, not soft, but somewhere inbetween. Say sorry, just let it be the word you mean.

Blood Brothers: Ah beutiful show that many do not understand. American's were not quite sure what to think about it. I personally loved the show. How much did I love it? In my collection I currently have:

Barbara Dickson, Kiki Dee, Stephanie Lawrence, and Petula Clark's take on the show. I also have the New Zealand Cast recording and a Czech version of the show. So yes... I love this show.

If you haven't seen the show I'm not sure how much you'll get from the cast album. It's a very powerful theatrical experience but the score is by no means its strongest element.

Before listening, be prepared to be "Marilyn Monroe'd" to death.

I really enjoy the Kiki Dee version, especially "Kids Game," "Bright new day," and "Tell me its not true." The opening music is really haunting and gorgeous as well.

There's always room for pathos - and jazz hands.

I love the opening too . . . I'm dying for a fresh, modern recording/take on this dated musical. The recordings sound antiquated and I always imagine updated orchestrations whenever I listen to it. Haha, it sucks having to do that.

I love the music to Blood Brothers! I only have the Petula/Cassidys version which i think is fine, but after reading this I think i might go out and try and find some others. But as for the person who commented on the hilarity of the Forbidden Broadway take on it, I TOTALLY AGREE!! "He's your brother! Just like...MARILYN MONROE!" hahaha it cracks me up every time...but yeah, its a great show! the analogies get cheesy and overdone, but it is very powerful.

And you'll get to see it when I play Mickey at JLOB this summer, right Geri? lol

I have to put in my 2 cents: LOVE the Barbara Dickson version. Maybe not as complete as the others, but something about the quality of her voice is irresistable.

I wouldn't recommend getting the CD until you've seen the show. It's really a play with music, and as someone else has said the 'Marylin Monroe' reprises will drive you batty after a while. However, it's a really really great show (IMO!) and well worth seeing if you ever get the chance . . .
