The Tony's are my Superbowl! But hey, to each his own. I did blow off a Yankee game on my birthday to go see a show and it kind of hurts to think I missed Yanks vs Cleveland to see Movin' Out. Yeah. That hurts a lot...It's ironic though. My father and I have very little in common but some how are able to commiserate over theater and baseball. Go figure. I also think he wishes I were a boy. But that's sort of off topic...

I am also a sports fan because I like to see the spirit of competition. I used to like team sports a lot more ( I did graduate work in Massachusetts and worked in New York - which introduced me to many American sports as well as to Broadway) , but I now find myself more interested in sports where individuals display their physical and mental agility. I am a great fan of FORMULA ONE racing now - for the last 9 nine years that the races can now be beamed to the entire world ( supposedly the largest viewing audience after the Olympics). I know that for someone like me who lives across the world from Broadway and the West End, it takes some doing to be able to see a good number of shows every year. But I try...Similarly, it is very difficult and a lot more expensive to go to a racing weekend ( I have been twice to the Monaco Grand Prix and once to the Montreal Grand Prix) as ticket prices can be much more expensive than even the cost of a premium seat in the theatre and hotels increase their rates by 2-3 times the normal prices.

But I think there is room for each leisure interest. I am not in the theatre industry - I am simply a theatre-loving fan - in much the same way that I am a devoted fan of certain sports.

Why is it that theater lovers are looked down upon or just ignored, while the world just about stops if sports lovers want to watch a game? Also, why does anybody not like (or claim not to like) the theater. I know that everyone has a right to his or her own opinion, but I cannot imagine somebody liking something as stupid and unentertaining as sports, and disliking something as wonderful as the broad way fever.

That's a pretty one-sided argument. Plenty of theater lovers look down on sports fans for being as passionate about sports as they are about theater...such as the comment above.

Theater is live, in small venues...compared to stadiums that fit upwards of 50,000 people and are carried on national TV. It's more accessible in the way movies are more accessible.

I love the theater...but I love sports too. I work for a sports magazine. I love going to Yankee Stadium as much as I love going to a Broadway show.

It's a matter of taste--some people like sports, some like theater, some like both. Or hate both and sit home and read a book. It's their choice, no one should get bashed for having an opinion.

it's also a matter of availability, i have life 7 espn channels in addition to foxsports, SPEED and others. In contrast I have one broadway channel, the music one, and random shows on pbs and logo. i wish there was a BROADWAY CHANNEL!! like news, spotlights and behind the scenes. I think there is a market.

C'mon if Al Gore can have his own channel why cant broadway??
