Well, then why did you ask? We can't recommend just one cast recording.
Some essentials, IMO, are:
1). Sweeney Todd. The Original Cast recording with Landsbury is wonderful, but I prefer the concert performance with LuPone and co! The recording is much more complete, the sound spectacular, the cast great, and the New York Philharmonic is really something. Murder has never been more clever or fun.
2). Les Miserables. I would go with the CRS (Complete Symphonic Recording) over any other recording, as it is the complete show and it is wonderful.
3). Miss Saigon. I think you would like this show, based on what else you have. Again, I would go with the CSR over the OLC. It's complete and features better performances, IMO.
4). Sondheim's Into the Woods is another show I treasure. Famous fairytales intertwined in brilliant fashion. Get the OBC with B. Peters. It's dynamite.
5). If you love Phantom, I think you'd also enjoy Jekyll & Hyde. Go with the Complete Work, on 2CDs, with Warlow and Eder. It's much better than the OBC.
6). I also really like Chess. It's very interesting. The concept work (on 2CDs) is standard, but I like the now out of print Danish Cast Recording best!
7). EVITA! Great show. I think you'd like it. Avoid the film soundtrack and stick with the American recording, with Patti LuPone.
. Ragtime. I love this show. It's an epic tale set to awesome music.
9). Aspects of Love. This is ALW's masterpiece IMO. It is definitely a work that requires effort and patience (I hated it for years). But, if you stick it out, you realize what a wonder it is. It's my favorite ALW show and one of my favorite musicals. It's only available on the OLC, but what a great recording it is.
10). The Witches of Eastwick. I love this show. It is spectacular, and the performances on the OLC are great.
11). Whistle down the Wind. Despite the bad southern accents, the music is both beautiful and rockin.' The OLC is quite good.
12). The Woman in White. Expensive now because you have to buy it as in import, but it is really something.
That's all I can think of right now. Of course, I love all these shows. If you really like the shows you have now, I think you will like all these. Ragtime and Aspects will be the biggest challanges, possibly, but they are both in my top 5.
You can find most of these, if not all, for sale used on Amazon.com. I prefer to look for used recordings, because you can get more for your money.
Hope this helps!

mythus- i was referring to the person who stated " thats all you have". i'm asking because for christmas, i don't have to buy the cds. my parents do! lol
Well, we all have to start some where. Really, I recommend that you suggest your parents buy them used thru Amazon.com. I've done so many times, and have never had a problem or received an item in bad condition. The cheaper each recording is, the more they can buy for you.
someone give me some cast recordings besides the ones i posted, I want to buy as many as i can!!

Personally, I've put in my request for the OLC of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang starring Michael Ball:)
Oh, I have the Chitty recording and it is oh so good.
Glad to hear it. I'm dying to hear Michael Ball sing "Hushabye Mountain" (as well as Esparza, when THAT recording comes out!) Thanks, I can't wait to get it now!~
You MUST own TABOO. This is a must! I would also suggest:
tick, tick...BOOM!
The Last 5 Years
Sweeney Todd
Gypsy (Bernadette Peters)
Sunday in the Park with George
Into the Woods (OBC)
Fiddler on the Rood (revival)
Cats - this is a staple.
Assassins
Jekyll and Hyde (2 disc version)
The Scarlet Pimpernel (OBC)
Caroline, or Change
Bombay Dreams
Nine (Antonio Banderas)
Man of LaMancha (revival)
and SO SO SO many more, but that would literally take me all night.
You can go to www.amazon.com and look up the CD and listen to 30 seconds of each song, which might be helpful so you can decide if you like what you hear or not.
He is great in Chitty, and there's so great new numbers too! It's really quite good. I love it! The Bombie Somba (for the Baroness) is great! Love her! There's a song for the child catcher too.
I'll add to that...
AMOUR
A MAN OF NO IMPORTANCE
PARADE
ANYTHING BY 'WILLIAM FINN'
MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG
FLOYD COLINS
MYTHS AND HYMNS
MY FAVIROUTE YEAR
ENJOY!

Aida
The Last 5 Years
YAGMCB
Taboo
and some Sonheim for good measure
Oh, I cannot agree about Taboo. I orginally bought the OLC, which was terrible. Then, when the OBC came out, everyone said it was better than the OLC, so I gave it another chance. Well, it wasn't. Sorry to those who like it, but I just think it's terrible and can understand why it was a flop.
I would suggest that you go on to towerrecords.com or amazon.com and listen to snippets of these suggestions. We all have different likes and dislikes, so you can at least hear pieces of these recordings before you request them.
Hey, I loved DOTV (musically)....and I'm sure I'm in the minority there. Well, I love TDV (everything about it), so that's why I like DOTV, but it did suck :)
