this is potentially a strange topic, but since I'm more active than usual on BWW tonight, I thought I'd pose it.

whenever I listen to Passion, I'm reminded of how much I think Donna Murphy's voice sounds like a clarinet. there's something about her range and the timbre of her voice that just...reminds me of a clarinet. I have a hard time pinning anyone else's voice down so specifically, but I'm thinking Victoria Clark would be a violin. her voice is too warm to be something like a flute, and I think a violin is the string instrument pitched right to be compared to her voice.

anyway, has anyone else ever thought of this before? what singers and instruments do you compare?

When I hear Lucia Popp sing The Queen of the Night I think she sounds like a pipe organ.

Marie: Don't be in such a hurry about that pretty little chippy in Frisco. Tony: Eh, she's a no chip!

This may be obvious, but Harvey Fierstein sounds like a (plunger) muted trumpet when he belts. Though when he's low or soft it reminds me of a cello or bass.

You're reminding me of people you hear at the movies asking questions every ten seconds, "Who is that? Why is that guy walking down the street? Who's that lady coming up to him? Uh-oh, why did that car go by? Why is it so dark in this theater?" - FindingNamo on strummergirl

"If artists were machines, then I'm just a different kind of machine...I'd probably be a toaster. Actually, I'd be a toaster oven because they're more versatile. And I like making grilled cheese" -Regina Spektor

"That's, like, twelve shows! ...Or seven." -Crazy SA Fangirl

"They say that just being relaxed is the most important thing [in acting]. I take that to another level, I think kinda like yawning and...like being partially asleep onstage is also good, but whatever." - Sherie Rene Scott

I definitely would compare Harvey to a cello or bass. or, maybe more accurately, an old phonograph recording of a cello or bass, to get some crackles and pops in there.

Judy Kuhn definitely sounds like a flute-- high or low.

Seth Rudetsky said the same thing!

Whoa-- I was just about to watch that video right now! I thought of Judy Kuhn because I saw the ad for Seth's video on the sidebar.
