Jason doesn't like people soliciting for his music, in fact it's not published, and he doesn't know you, you will only make him very angry. ESPECIALLY via his personal email.
Find another song or transcribe it yourself.

Posted: 2/24/05 at 9:24amHe has posted that email address many times on message boards and news groups as well as on his newsletter for requests to be added to his mailing list, so it appears that he uses that email address for general fan correspondence. A simple search on r.a.t.m. through Google will bring this address up a multitude of times (as posted by himself).

Posted: 2/24/05 at 9:40amListen to Jamie Hat...I tried it once back when I had hoped to get sheet music to one of his songs to sing in a cabaret act...he was VERY RUDE to me in his response..said he wasn't in the publishing business and I'd have to wait just like everyone else. Every other writer I've ever had contact with was glad to, at the very least, send a lead sheet for the material - because most writers can't wait to have their music performed, by anyone and everyone. He's an arrogant little ...well I won't post that here. LOL...

what do you mean by " A simple search on r.a.t.m. through Google will bring this address up a multitude of times (as posted by himself)" sorry i just got confused. Do you think that he'll get mad with just fanmail.

r.a.t.m. refers to the newsgroup rec.arts.theatre.musicals. Go to Google, click on groups, do a search for "musical theatre" and you will come up with a page that has a link to the newsgroup at the top of the page. Once you are at the newsgroup, do a search on newyorkrock@mindspring.com and a bunch of posts by and about Jason Robert Brown will come up.
I can’t imagine why he would get angry getting any fanmail at the address, but then again, back in the "Parade" days he used to be really good about responding to people who wanted copies of his music ( I recall him posting at some point about sending a self addressed stamped envelope to him C/O Lincoln Center for copies of any of his songs) but it seems like he’s had a change of heart since then. So I guess there is no telling. Sounds like now he is more interested in insulting his fanbase then getting his music out there.
Interesting that it now seems to be better advice to have someone transcribe a song off of a recording (something I would think would be frowned upon by writers, if not outright unethical) then to contact the composer himself.

Posted: 2/24/05 at 11:42amWhy would you want to send fan mail to someone when you have to ask if they'll be angry to receive it?
#11re: contacting Jason Robert Brown?
Posted: 2/24/05 at 11:58ambecause im one of those wide eyed fans of his that think he's the best thing for the musical since sondheim and i have no shame in admitting lol. so would i like to write him yes. but on the other hand i dont want a nasty letter back and i know that, that can happen even with the nicest people.IE: i saw wicked and idina was very gracious and the next day my friends went and said that she walked out and wouldn't even look at the fans and had brushed them off. So i was just proceeding with caution

Posted: 2/24/05 at 12:41pmI have a friend that got music from him recently, like 2 months ago. Don't worry about it. Just write him. If he's an ass, then he's an ass. If he's incredibly nice, than there ya go. Tell us what his response is!

I bet he got fifty billion requests for the Last Five Years score WAY before it was published. I don't think that would make anyone happy.
Then to make things worse, the score of the Chicago version began to circulate EVERYWHERE.

Here's the latest info from him:
I know, you're still reeling from my last e-mail about my L.A. concert coming this Saturday, March 12 (and if you haven't bought your tickets yet, I can't imagine what on Earth you're waiting for), but I have yet more excitement to share with you. Sure, I have to leave sunny California next week, but look what I get to do!
Tuesday, March 15: Pianist Anthony deMare will present the world premiere of my piano sonata, entitled "Mr. Broadway," in his solo recital at Zankel Hall. He's also playing the music of actual composers, like Pulitzer Prize-winners David del Tredici (a world premiere) and Paul Moravec (another world premiere), and my hero, Fredric Rzewski, as well as jazz legend Fred Hersch (yet another world premiere!) and Meredith Monk. And there's all kinds of cool technological things like lights and video and who knows what else. The point is, I'm going to be there, it's going to be really cool, and Tony is truly one of the world's great pianists, a spectacular technician with a lot of soul and a great taste for adventure.
So dig that, March 15 at 7:30 pm at Zankel Hall, Anthony deMare presents "Gotham Glory," a solo evening celebrating the many musical faces of New York City, featuring video by Anney Bonney and lighting by Jared Sayeg.
TICKETS: $18-$28. Seating is limited so please order tickets early for best seats…
To order tickets, call Carnegie Charge at 212-247-7800 or visit www.carnegiehall.org
DIRECTIONS: Zankel Hall is located at 7th Avenue between 56th and 57th streets at the corner of 57th street and 7th Avenue

But then, if that wasn't enough coolness for you:
Saturday, March 19: Symphony Space is dedicating its annual "Wall-to-Wall" concert to the music of Stephen Sondheim, on the occasion of his 75th birthday, and for the occasion, I have been asked to contribute three choral arrangements, which will be performed by the Juilliard Choral Union, under the direction of the amazing Judith Clurman. (I will be banging along on the piano, for those of you who are into that.) While the concert goes from 11AM to 11PM, my arrangements will be in the Orchestral Segment, which starts at 8 pm, with a big orchestra and amazing soloists. I'll also be participating in a panel discussion on "Sondheim And Lyrics" (does he write those too?) with Richard Maltby Jr. and Georgia Stitt, and that'll be happening some time between 5 pm and 8 pm. And ... it's FREE, that's right, the whole concert is free, and you can go for the whole day and not spend a nickel. But if you want PRIORITY admission, you just have to become a Symphony Space member. Anyway, you can find out all the info here:

That's my Spring Break in New York! Hope to see you there!
All best,
J.
