so glad to share my thoughts, everyone. i look forward to hearing others' opinions as well. i feel very priviledged to have been one of the first to see the show. they even gave us a "gift" as we exited the theatre - a DVD of the movie. of course it's not a US region DVD, so it won't even play on our player!
i bought the VHS for 3 bucks in the bargain bin at FYE!
who would put tha movie in the bargain bin!?
billy in the bargain bin? that's criminal!!
did you know a new 2-disc version of the movie is being released in the UK on 9 May to coincide with the official opening of the musical?? and there are EXTRAS on the musical billys!!

I wasnt asking if he was gay cus he danced. I was just asking because I'm losed minded sometimes and the thing about him kissing his friend because it would be the last time they'd see each other thing through me off. Thank you!
Thank you SOOO much for that AWSOME review! I wish more ppl would do better reviews like that! I agree about some of that not going over to well down here in CLOSED minded Georgia! IT'S HELL DOWN HERE!!!!Sorry!lol! THANKS!
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH BILLY TWO DISK!!! i'm going crazy, Cturtle stop...
this also makes me crazy b/c i know that ill never see it!
fosseboi: earlier in the show, michael wants billy to warm up his hands and he kisses billy on the cheek. when billy leaves to go to the ballet school, he kisses michael back because he knows he'll really like it as a going away gesture
the reason people don't write detailed reviews more often is because it's a lot of work and it takes time! i'm a slow writer, and it took me most of the day to write that review! but i knew a lot of people here would be interested in hearing about the show, and i also wanted to put my thoughts down on paper to help me remember the experience. a printed copy of the review will go in our 2005 memory box
CQT: i know how you feel! i hope they'll release the dvd special edition on THIS side of the pond!
i hope they will!! i beg them too! AAH!
my obsession is out of control. does anyone have a teaser?
Well, thanks again for taking the time. It's a great review!

Thats so sweet!
cturtle- ha! the memory box thing is cute! But, this has been the worst year EVER, and I am NOT over exagerating!, so I DEF dont want toremember ANYTHING from this year! Unless I actually get to go to NYC, THAT I want to remember!LOL!
you're welcome! we also saw LES MIS (wonderful to see it again), A LIFE IN THE THEATRE (great to see PATRICK STEWART on stage), and the ROYAL BALLET (exquisitely brilliant!) ... but i have no energy left to write about those!
A-STAR review- thanks!
I'm off to see the show next month.
From friends who worked on the fit-up, I understand that the company responsible for major scenic elements really cut corners. All the publicity about delaying previews because the kids were tired is just a cover for the fact that the set was constructed on the cheap!
thanks for the scoopy. now THAT i'd BELIEVE!
That was a great review cturtle, thank you ! Can't wait to see it on my upcoming London trip in 2 weeks ! Any news about the cast recording ? Also, did they sell souvenir brochures at the theatre or is it very early yet ?
Take care
yay! you're going to have a great time i know nothing bout the cast recording, but apdarcey seems to know something ...

yes, there is a souvenir program that can be had for 4 pounds. it includes a lot of background information, and a good many photos of the billys. unfortunately, the photos are not captioned, so it's hard to tell which billy is which! and some of the photos are quite small. there's NO list of musical numbers, which is disappointing. (maybe because it's still in previews and the numbers may change.) but for approximately 8 usd, it's quite a bargain!
It's occurred to me to add a little info about Lee Hall. This is really his story - he wrote the original screenplay for the movie also - except that he was a kid in these circumstances who wanted to be a writer. Wisely, he chose to substitute a more visually entertaining career for Billy to aspire towards!
When Elton John first saw the movie in Cannes, he immediately started talking about making it into a musical, because the story also relates to him. His own father disapproved strongly of Elton's interest in pop music, and unfortunately never could bring himself to support him even after Elton's enormous success.
thanks, chloe! yes, the "making of" story of the movie and musical is quite interesting! the souvenir program has excellent stories written by HALL and JOHN.
JOHN: "It's not very often you can say a film changes your life. I had no idea what I was walking into when I accepted an invitation to the premiere of BILLY ELLIOT at the Cannes Film Festival... My response to the film was profound. The story of young Billy, a gifted working class boy with artistic ambitions seemingly beyond his reach, had so many parallels to my own childhood..."
My lover is not just a terrific man, but he's a wonderful writer! This review will be a treasured momento in our 2005 Memory Box. My hope is that my memory will always be intact so that I'll always have my memories of you. Mmmmmwaah! -xox-
my partner wrote the above post after reading my review for the first time. (aint love grand?)
Bumping this up to share an interesting article with Lee Hall and Elton John discussing the creation of Billy Elliot.
Lee Hall/Elton John
excellent article, chloe thanks so much for pointing us to it! i'd like to run into sir elton rummaging through the CD racks sometime
i always order music online. maybe i should get myself to one of the atlanta music stores for a chance to get a peek!
this makes me more and MORE depressed that i'll never see this show! *cries in a corner*
I'm sorry you feel that way, but things change, and hopefully this will be around for a long time.
Caroline, I know how you feel ! I desperately wanted to see Light in The Piazza and marvel at my beloved Matt on stage, but it will not happen ! But, I will see Billy for you too ! :) Hope you get to see Piazza for me ! :)
Take care
This will mainly be of interest to those few here who've been able to see the show, but I thought I'd put it up on the board anyway. A poster named Miu at Dress Circle reports on changes since the early previews:
'I saw the show this afternoon again having seen one of the earlier previews. Things have been changed around quite a bit. Firstly the flying is now in the Second Act where Billy's dance for his dad used to be. (His dad walks in and sees the end of it). An altered version of what was originally Billy's dance for his dad is now at the end of "Electricity". I think this works well. The final song that Billy used to sing to his Grandma has now been cut completely. The 'Angry' tap dance at the end of Act 1 has been shortened slightly as has "Born to Boogie". Can't think of anything else that has changed considerably except a few small dialogue changes. All the changes are definately improvements though. Also had the joy of seeing the big tap finale at the end of the show today which was fantastic . I think by opening night this show is going to be absolutely stunning.'
