Posted: 10/14/06 at 12:43pmOkay...I am definitely a Broadway person. I have a bright voice, and my voice teacher says dark songs compliment it well. I am thirteen years old and am going to go to a theater competition in March, so i have plenty of time. I need dark, obscure songs to work on. I am a soprano, and i do not NEED sad songs, just dark. i would also like a Broadway song that can be regarded as a rock/pop/disco or open song so i can enter in two categories. help!

If there's an obscure show out there, it's certainly Phantom of the Opera...
Does this have to be age specific? And what kind of soprano are you? How High?

An example of a good song for my range is Goodnight My Someone from Music Man. Unfortunately, wrong age and wrong style. POTO is a more commonly used than i need.

Moonfall from Edwin Drood
It's a little old for you, but most dark songs will be.

Posted: 10/15/06 at 5:52pm"A New Life" from Jekyll and Hyde? I don't know how dark it's considered, but it can be sung by a soprano.

Posted: 10/15/06 at 5:54pmmo good deed from wicked, if you belt, because the belting it requires is rock kind of, or when i look at you from the scarlet pimpernel, because it has head/ chest voice and it builds

Not a Day Goes By would be beautiful
When I Look at You would be apropriate.
So In Love.
No Wicked
No Phantom
No Last Five Years
No Rent
No Les Miz

A dark song? Why not try "I Wish I Could Forget You" from "Passion"
"Beautiful" from "Marie Christine" or "Adela" from "Bernarda Alba"

Posted: 10/15/06 at 6:09pmMaybe Tom from Hello Again by Michael John. It is probably the wrong age bracket for you. Audra McDonald sings it on her Way Back To Paradise CD, it is a wonderful song.

"A New Life" from Jekell and Hyde.
That is such a great song.

2 things to keep in mind she's a soprano so things like a New Life are not appropriate and she's 13 sooooo I wish I could forget you isn't appropriate.
I would go with The Glamorous Life from Night music. It can be found in the Sondheim Film and Television book. It's soprano AND age appropriate. It also has a little bit of irony to it so while it's not slit-your-veins-open dark, it's not just a pretty song.
re: 'dark songs'#16
Posted: 10/15/06 at 7:18pmI wouldn't call Aida unknown but maybe "Every Story is a love Store" (it's rock and an opening number) or "I Know the Truth"

Posted: 10/16/06 at 10:08pmIf you can find music for it, "Lament" from Evita is a hauntingly beautiful song. The vocal line is simple yet gorgeous, and the accompaniment is equally beautiful. Only problem is that it is not included in the vocal selections book.
